“In March 2024, the House passed a bill that could lead to a nationwide ban of TikTok in the United States unless its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, sells the app within six months. The bill has broad bipartisan support, with Republicans and Democrats alike warning that TikTok is a national security threat.”

I think they’ll sell it honestly. We’ll see what happens

Some large company that can afford it. The CEO of Activision said he was interested. Meta would jump at it given the chance but regulators probably wouldn’t allow that due to antitrust concerns. Google, Microsoft, Elton Musk, Oracle, Snap, who knows. There’d be no shortage of people lining up to buy it since purchasing a social media company that popular with younger people would be a huge opportunity.

… why is America banning shit like this, it’s so bizarre. Obviously there’s some spurious reason why it’s being done, but it’s just disgusting and unamerican .

it’s been said to share way too much “hateful antisemetic content”, for example… (too much “free speech”)

I can’t see this happening… idk what will happen. I think the government underestimates the popularity of tiktok though, I would compare this to Prohibition a century ago or something. Some people compare social media to being addictive like a drug… would it inspire massive use of VPNs, or other workarounds? A thousand more Tiktoks being started in response?

VPNs? Highly doubtful, people don’t bother with that especially on mobiles.
