AI Summary:
Elon Musk has fired tens of thousands of federal government employees through his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) Musk reportedly requires the remaining workers to send the department a weekly email featuring five bullet points describing what they accomplished that week. Part of that plan reportedly is also to replace many government workers with AI systems. AI experts say there are many ways in which the government use of AI can go wrong, which is why it needs to be adopted carefully and conscientiously. In the US, the state of Michigan had a problem with AI that can make mistakes or show bias. Many of those denied benefits were dealt with harshly, including being hit with multiple penalties and accused of fraud. AI has caused problems in government when it’s used to determine things like someone’s parole eligibility or in police departments. Schellmann says the AI used by police departments is typically trained on historical data from those departments, and that can cause the AI to recommend over-policing areas that have long been overpoliced. An IT person in the Department of Justice might have a very different job from one in the department of Agriculture, for example, even though they have the same job title. If AI is developed responsibly, it can be very helpful. AI can automate repetitive tasks so workers can focus on more important things. But it does need to be given time to be deployed in the correct manner.

should be some human intermediary with ai decisions, I’ve seen ai go wrong plenty of times. I just asked for a calendar date of like easter the other day and got the wrong date for this year, which I only caught because I doubted it was correct based on some vague idea of what date I was looking for already
Someone once said AI is an expert on things I know nothing about. Though on things I’m an expert on, it’s wrong forty percent of the time…
It’s kind of funny that an AI bot summarized this article 🤔
Yeah lol. I did think about these issues hence why I made it full foss (I think its important for the purposes of transparency and good first step). I highly doubt Elon will make his implementation of whatever he wants foss tho.
