This idea became of more interest with mandated lockdowns in recent years, but even before those the idea of touring places virtually seemed appealing: while we might not be able to afford travellings everywhere, we could get a lot of digital samplings of many places in the world.

There are video tours, tours in pictures, travel blogs that discuss details about possible travel destinations. You could also of course travel to some of these destinations in person and virtually touring could act as a good test to prepare you for actually traveling.

Any thoughts on “virtual tourism” or tips for doing so? Destination ideas, and so on?

To some extent you can do this now, google street view is pretty good to get the feel for a place, you can find various locations of interests through searches, etc. But it would be really cool to have this done even better / more thoroughly.

I’d be particularly interested in places that I wouldn’t otherwise travel to because of safety concerns or other reasons, though unfortunately those are also not the places that this would likely be available for.
