Seriously, the pace of lemmy development is like russian frontline progress in Ukraine. Maybe something is up here considering devs are most likely Russians.
Have we had any serious updates in last year? I don’t recall tbh. UI is the same, funcionalities are the same. Usability still is garbage, users are confused. I’m confused, although I’m over a year on lemmy. I only use my own instance because interactions with the rest of fediverse is confusing as f**.
Checking up https://fedidb.com/ and https://fediverse.observer/stats confirms that. Fedidb even stopped showing charts, I assume because it looks bad othwerwise they would proudly present the growth. Observer shows us that total number is going up, but it looks like folks just quickly check and leave cause number of active users is still the same.
Guy that entusiastically regularly posted weekly fediverse updates here https://fediversereport.com/fediverse-report-122/ stopped doing that 3 months ago. Posted for over 2 years and suddenly no message from him.
I feel like it is yea. Lemmy turns a lot of ppl off with its extremists
Just took a look and I would almost guarantee this guy is western and even more likely in the anglosphere. One of those interesting situations where countries that actually experienced authoritarian socialism (like yours) are far less supportive of its reintroduction than countries who didn’t experience it. I wonder why…
It’s not just Lemmy, fedi in general has dipped. There are also so many alternatives. When Digg imploded, internet growth was still exponential and Reddit was close to a single alternative. Now Reddit is bigger than Digg ever was. Digg had 40m MAU back in 2009 where as Reddit has 90m DAU so more than twice the monthly unique users in a day. Add to this there are multiple options, just on on fedi: kbin, piefedi, mbin, lotide. Then there are all the standalone sites, disqus being the biggest.
90m dau is wild.
Is it going to surpass Facebook?!
… No
lol
What makes you think so based on his github page?
“One of those interesting situations where countries that actually experienced authoritarian socialism (like yours) are far less supportive of its reintroduction than countries who didn’t experience it” - you can’t reintroduce system to the country that has never had it. In Poland it’s reintrudction. In USA it would be introduction.
I am aware that there are plenty of leftists in west who think communist is good because it’s in opposition to current status quo and they always want to fight with something and it’s also in opposition to conservatives thinking. However from what I’m seeing on ther internet folks like that usually don’t know what they are talking about, they rarely stop and think what ideas they preach really mean deeply and lead to in long term. I’d say people who “like” communism in west are 90% teens and young adults. They need to direct their young rebellion energy somewhere to fight status quo. And most probably they grow out of it within few years.
On the other hand, people in Russia and China have communist and collectivism ideas deeply rooted in their minds, these ideas have been with them for generations. The state makes sure that society sees communism as a good and rightful system. To achieve this, it relies on a massive propaganda machine that operates on every level. People are raised with the belief that collectivism and the subordination of the individual to the common good are what brought the country development and prosperity. These people study it, study their “history” and read books about it.
Essays on dessalines page are very solidly written, he has a lot of knowledge about these ideas. It would be much easier to write like that for a russian born (actually I’d say he is russian born but lived in USA or UK cause his english is very good, could even be born in USA but had russian parents, there are millions of russian immigrants in US) than western. He 100% is not American, cause he pretty much shits on USA big time.
Not a Russian accent

Claims the US is his country
https://np.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/bmygbt/comment/en253x7/
He claims that 77% of Czechs for example believe the country is worse off under communism.
https://github.com/dessalines/essays/blob/main/socialism_faq.md
The medium article he linked says
Roughly 28 percent of Czechs say they were better off under the Communist regime, according to a poll conducted by the polling institute SC&C and released Sunday.
Only 23 percent said they had a better life now.
From the actual article
The previous regime was assessed as better by 31 percent of Czechs, while roughly the same proportion, 32 percent, preferred the existing system.
Even though that’s not a good result, it’s still vastly different to his view… that it should be reintroduced. It’s also from 2011 so is cherry picked as broadly speaking things were rough in the earlier period of transition to democracy.
Plenty of Americans shit on the USA and it’s not just the communists
9% not at all proud
https://news.gallup.com/poll/692150/american-pride-slips-new-low.aspx
Wow, that’s solid thanks, had no idea he had youtube. Yeah, he’s American.
I can imagine even more than 9% not proud, but it doesnt mean they don’t like / hate their own country. They have indifferent attitude, no love, no hate I would suppose. Similar to everywhere in the world. Although actually some first generation immigrants could actually hate the country and society. This is what we see in european countries with immigrants who do terrorist attacks.
So I’m guessing his parents are russian immigrants. Might be wrong of course, that’s my guess though.
“He claims that 77% of Czechs for example believe the country is worse off under communism.”
No, on github he says “worse off now than under communism”, so he says 77% Czechs believe they country is worse off now. So it looks like he wants to prove that majority of Europeans want to go back to old system, which he uses as example of how great communism was for people. But yeah, the article is from 2019 and some stats he takes are from as far as 2011, so quite old.
That article and these percentages is complete bs. I can tell you firsthand since I’m living in Poland. Poland is deveoping in about similar rate as other countries from that post communist block. And people are much better and happier. The guy who wrote that article writes for diplomaticpost.co.uk which apparently is some commies publishers nest in UK, so not surprising. Lies.
I would say these percentages were correct in early 1990s, where those countries basically collapsed, there was huge unemployment, there were no businesses running, corruption, small amount people who had connections in communist party stole all the capital (95% was state owned - land, production facilities, residential buildings, actually every building, farmlands, healthcare, education etc etc) that was built with hands of entire society through the years and was a common property. These folks now are richest folks Polish people. That transition was far from clean and fair.
Things are a bit better now, cause even though some folks had an unfair advantage in the beginning by stealing from society, they were many times unqualified to manage a capital and some of them just wasted it. Though still majority of capital is in the hands of those early “wild west” stealers I would say and also western big corporations who also got hands on all that capital which was sold to them by the early governments which were run by former communists. But there are new companies that were created and built solely by clever ideas and hard work and they bring hope. And first and foremost actually even though the capital was distributed unfairly, those people still need to bring value out of it and produce high quality products and services because otherwise somebody else will do it, so the society still wins. That’s the beauty of competition.
I could go on, it’s a long story. In general the story of polish transition from the old system I see as good people vs evil people. Those who want good for society and people around them vs those who think only about themselves. And it keeps going like that today as well cause the same people are still in the today’s government and government is tighlty coupled with big capital in Poland because of 1990s transition where everything started.
Yeah obviously that’s a mistake on my part (should have been worse off now than it was under communism) but it relates back to the original part of western communists wanting to retvrn to the USSR and it’s Satellites.
There are actually some interesting discussions surrounding Fediverse growth…
…but your first paragraph is so bizarre I don’t think this thread is genuine in it’s intentions.
What do you mean? I live in Poland, that frontline is pretty close to me. I keep up with the situation there. The war is no taboo here. People discuss it daily. Russians progress of their “special military operation” is extremely slow. 500 square km gained over the last year at the cost of few hundred thousand men who died.
And As a proof to my suggestion about the Devs I linked main developer GitHub page where he spreads love for the communism and USSR.
