  • Of course you can be forgiven, and believe me I understand your fear. It’s scary being here too, my political ideology was basically declared a terrorist ideology yesterday and met with calls from our government for mass violence against people who hold my views.

That said, I dont hold all Germans responsible for WWII. I don’t hold all isrealis responsible for Gaza or all Russians responsible for Ukraine. I think the people who dissent against those regimes living in those countries are the best positioned to meaningfully do something about their governments, and even if they haven’t done enough to fully end the problems yet they are impactful. At least Russia and Ukraine today have active protests and civil disobedience that help if nothing else push back against the internal propaganda engines in their countries

At a time when everything seems bleak, I think finding allies where you can is more important than ever. Some of those allies will come from within. My understanding is people living in Germany who didn’t like hitler were instrumental to his downfall once Germany was meaningfully being invaded.

You can and should be worried about what the fascist USA is capable of, but I promise whatever there is that can be done against it I will be there to help (for whatever that’s worth as a non military person who is also trying to provide for my family while resisting fascism). I wish it could be more.

  • I wish you wouldn’t generalize the whole nation like this. Yes, roughly 1/3 of people voted for trump. Of those, a smaller number actually knew what they were doing and the ramifications of it, the rest just watch fox news and never leave their house. Not a good excuse but also not exactly willful hate.

Then there about a third who don’t have time, money, or mental energy to drop everything and try to start a resistance full time. They still have too much to lose and just want to wait this out.

Then there’s the rest of us actively trying to improve things as best we can through community organizing, resistance efforts, protesting and counter protesting, etc. We aren’t professionals, we aren’t perfect at it, but we are also not lying down and taking it. Sure, we could all just leave, but I don’t think anyone in the world wants to see what America would be like without ANY resistance to this, even assuming we had the funds to move and would be accepted by any other country.

It is depressing and often feels powerless to live here right now. We hate it and want to fix it however we can, and some of us are ready to sacrifice everything to do it. America is NOT (and never had been) a political monolith, and we extremely all do not support trump (look at his approval ratings if nothing else). The sane people here are largely ignored because our views aren’t really represented by either main party and don’t make the cut of the billionaire controlled news media who wants to keep it that way.

Beyond all of this, no one deserves to be personally blamed for the actions of their countries worst politicians simply for existing in the same physical space. Especially those of us fighting against it however we can

  • You are mostly scamming the corpos who host the content, which is a-ok in my book. If you really want there are lots of ways to support the actual creator much more cheaply than paying for a subscription to the hoster of the content. It always helps me to remember all the times that those companies screw us by changing rates, adding ads, restricting starting options, etc without providing better content to justify it. This is just payback, really. See also, stealing from your employer

  • Our office allowed voting to elect a committee to determine what return to office should look like. I was elected to it. They also hired external contractors to mediate basically. Some people came into it thinking everyone should go back to office, but by the end of it we settled that being in office should be required for certain types of work activities and not for others, and apart from the required activities for in office employees could be wherever. We drafted this up into a formalized agreement and everyone was happy with it.

Then the president who did that program retired and the new guy immediately scrapped the whole thing and forced everyone back into the office overnight without any discussion from the committee or other employees.

  • I feel this deeply. Others have said it already, but the thing that’s helped me the most is getting involved with the solution. Local community organizing, mutual aid groups, political candidates in your area, etc etc etc there are many options (and feel free to message me if you want more help finding them) and nothing felt ok until I could feel like I was doing something other than passively sitting around watching the country/world collapse.

Others have also said closing off news and social media. This is also a good step, but I would caution against doing so 100%. Maybe set aside a day or two a week where you get caught up for an hour or two then turn it off the rest of the time. It’s still important to be aware, particularly as the suffering is becoming more and more local and ubiquitous, but it definitely becomes all consuming if done too much.

You sound like an empathetic person, and people like you are needed to help drive change. Fascism won’t go away in it’s own or with one more election cycle to vote it out. The upshot is most organizing and community strengthing efforts are just generally positive for mental health in their own right and may lead and may lead to new friendships and activities that you enjoy
