I am trying to give this series a chance since it’s done by the same author as The Girl I Like Forgot Her Glasses. However, I am really struggling so far.
This MC seems to be extra edgy simply for the sake of it. He even had a sidekick/inner monologue calling out his lameness and he lashes out in reaction to it. He keeps getting opportunities to try to, even in a small way, connect to another human being, and then wrecks it. We are probably just over a volume in at this point and the MC isn’t any more likeable than in the beginning.
Seriously? He’s so edgy that he’s kind of growing on me for his delusions.
I think the thing that’s turning me off is how self-aware of it he is.
Like, Cid from TEIS is similar, but done in a humorous way and he is just oblivious to how his alter-ego impacts the world and people around him. Yodaka on the other hand cares a ton about how he is perceived by those around him and, like in this chapter, gets mad at himself when he pushes people away.
I am realizing that perhaps I am reading this with the wrong mindset. I kept waiting for him to start to show some kind of growth and connect to people around him since that is pretty much what happened in the author’s previous work. However, perhaps the genre for this series is completely different.
I think you are probably expecting some similarities with her previous adorable work. I am still giving it time.
