The idea grew organically during the process of painting :) Starting with a hazy grey sky I felt like contrasting it with a bold, black shape that also emphasizes its verticality. From there I just knew that it had to be a prototypical foreboding dark monolith, towering over a vast, plain landscape (or sea, as it ended up being); backlit by what might be the sun, contrasting both the blackness of the monolith and the drabness of the sky.
