The Role of Comedians, Experts, and Fear in Shaping Public Opinion: A Discussion with Dave Smith

This Joe Rogan Experience podcast features a conversation with comedian and political commentator Dave Smith, exploring themes of expertise, the role of fear in shaping public opinion, and the manipulation of narratives by media and government. The discussion touches on the Iraq War, the Patriot Act, and the events surrounding 9/11.

Key Points:

  • The “Comedian” Critique: Smith addresses the criticism that he’s “just a comedian” and therefore unqualified to comment on serious issues. He argues that his perspective as an outsider allows him to critically analyze narratives presented by compromised media outlets and supposed “experts.”
  • The Illusion of Expertise: The conversation questions the notion of expertise, particularly in complex geopolitical issues. They argue that many commentators lack comprehensive knowledge across relevant fields (economics, sociology, etc.) and that even those with specific expertise can be wrong or biased.
  • The Weaponization of Fear: Rogan and Smith discuss how fear is used to manipulate public opinion and implement tyrannical policies. They cite examples like the Bush administration’s fearmongering after 9/11 and the COVID-19 pandemic response, where officials allegedly sought to increase public fear.
  • 9/11 and the Patriot Act: The discussion delves into the aftermath of 9/11, highlighting the initial sense of unity and the subsequent exploitation of the tragedy to push pre-existing agendas, such as the Iraq War and the Patriot Act.
  • Neoconservatism and the Project for a New American Century: Smith criticizes the neoconservative movement and its influence on American foreign policy. He references the Project for a New American Century, a think tank whose members advocated for multiple wars to establish American dominance.
  • Predictions of 9/11: The conversation touches on the predictions of 9/11, including Alex Jones’s statements. While acknowledging the accuracy of some predictions, they note that the World Trade Center had been attacked before, suggesting a broader context for understanding these events.
  • The Role of Intelligence Agencies in Hip Hop: Rogan and Smith briefly discuss the theory that intelligence agencies played a role in the rise of gangster rap, reflecting on the impact of NWA’s music.

Highlighted Information:

  • Smith argues that being a comedian allows him to offer a critical perspective on complex issues, free from the constraints of traditional expertise.
  • Rogan and Smith contend that fear is a powerful tool used to manipulate public opinion and justify policy decisions.
  • Smith criticizes the neoconservative movement for allegedly hijacking American foreign policy after 9/11 to pursue a pre-determined agenda of global dominance.
  • The Project for a New American Century document is cited, where members allegedly stated that a “Pearl Harbor type event” might be necessary to garner public support for their goals.

Who could possibly be against this content. It’s weird how lemmy gets major downvotes on things with no comments, and no explanation. I don’t see this happening on any of the other website I use.

The passive aggressive need to silence anything someone dislikes is strong on this site. It’s so weak.

I agree; it is a sad state of affairs.

We can all learn from those we may not agree with 100%.

I think the views expressed in this video are more in line with the working class thoughts of what our government has done and continues to do in the world.
