If only we could have prevented this somehow.
The imoetant part is that we’ve found a way to entirely blame the democrats while ignoring the realities of the policial process.
I expect much more of this as we move to government controlled by republicans.
Every grievance will be the democrats fault. Every triumphant will be of the republican’s crafting.
…but Biden signed this bill? Is he not a Democrat or am I missing something?
That’s the issue I think. Liberals will argue that he had to sign the bill because America can’t survive any principled stand whatsoever. So if Democrats think that trans people are an acceptable loss, what are the rest of us going to do about it?
They’re a tiny percentage. But this is very much a “first they came for the trans” situation.
Liberals will argue that he had to sign the bill because America can’t survive any principled stand whatsoever
Yeah, I took this from the original post screenshot as well. But I got the impression that u/Clent is unironically trying to say that the Democrats aren’t at fault here, and I was very confused as to why they would express that in this post, or why it had positive upvotes.
Actually, it’s kind of weird that there’s a lot of “Ha! It’ll be worse under the Republicans, you’ll see!” comments on this post that is very uncomfortable, especially when the original post specifically talks about needing cis-allyship in these times…
So he should he forced the government shutdown? He can’t affect the budget choices of congress and the incoming administration isn’t going to do better so was he supposed to grandstand while all government employees suffer.
This funding was going away no matter what Biden did. Allowing harm to other people for no gain is deplorable.
Unprecendented geopolitical pressures had him signing this rather than any ill will toward lgbtq folks I’m sure. If only the Line-Item Veto had become law.
A line item veto is a far, far worse prospect. As much good as you think it could do with a president that had good intentions, imagine the harm that it could do in the hands of someone like Trump? Passing bills that are remotely bipartisan require a certain amount of compromise; if any of the people involved know that the things they wanted in a bill get stripped out by a hostile president, hen there’s absolutely no reason to compromise at all. That’s a very bad thing, since it results in complete gov’t shutdown and permanent gridlock even if you have a single party controlling every branch of the gov’t.
Not voting in protest???
Voting may “materially affect” the “political landscape”, but not voting in protest allows you to feel smugly superior to voters at the low low price of making life worse for yourself and the people you express alliance to.
The moral here is that individual ppl need to stand up for LGBTQ ppl as much as possible, b/c political realities of Dems being a minority party right now means that they don’t have the ability to stand up for trans rights while also making sure that critical things like funding the gov’t happens
The republican party hates things that will never affect their lives and hates people that they will never meet. They get votes by fear mongering and hate.
The democratic party doesn’t care about the things that will never affect their lives and only care about people they will never meet because it’s convenient. They get votes by trying to disingenuously pander to everyone.
Whether you are left or right, we are all being manipulated. We’re taught to hate each other for our differences instead of finding common ground. Whether it’s propaganda from the news or Russian bots, they are all trying to make us hate each other.
This is why the two party system is completely fucked. It’s what makes all this even possible. It makes people have to choose a side in a “us vs them” scenario. When in reality the only people that are truly represented are the extremes of either side. Because of this people have to choose what’s most important to them and take sides instead of trying to find a compromise in the middle. I don’t believe every Republican is a fascist and I don’t believe every Democrat is a communist. The majority of people I’ve met lean either way depending on the issue because it’s not a black and white and never has been. If you made a list of every problem in the entire world and told me you were splitting them into two categories, I’d say you need more fucking categories.
All I know is my dad is a hardcore republican and he was perfectly fine with LGBTQ+ people before Trump came around. He even voted to legalize gay marriage back when it first started showing up in states when I was a kid. Now he goes around with a t-shirt of the American flag that says “this is my pride flag.”
And? Trans is even more cooked under Rs what exactly can an ally do politically until next primaries anyway?
Yeah, there isn’t really much you can do to “prepare.” Ds would pass campaign finance reform and singlepayer if we gave them the 60 senate votes, so that seems like the only option for anybody even remotely concerned about these issues.
Yeah sure, the party that jumped right to betraying the voter base it claimed to protect against the end of democracy, but not so much that it would run on an anti billionaire platform, would totally limit billionaires power if it just got more votes…
Yes.
Actually Yes.
Like you do realize there were two options, right? And that the worst option won because people were too afraid of the lesser evil?
I fail to understand your argument. So you think the lesser evil will do good on changing one of its core evils because the other evil is worse?
Why? Which motivations would they have? Which pressure applies to them? They just have proven again that they rather betray the people than the donors.
They rather lost to Trump than oppose the donor class. Why would you think they would change it if working for the donor class got even rewarded by the people they fuck over?
What “core belief” do you think Democrats have? Because I’m pretty fucking certain I can find a bill they voted on which directly contradicts your statement.
Is it Campaign Finance? They voted 45D + 6R in 1995 to enact Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act but it got filibustered until it passed in 2002 with 48 D + 11 R + 1 Ind. Then, the SCOTUS took it down in 2009 in a 5-4 vote. That was immediately followed by Speechnow org v. FEC (2010), which authorized the creation of Super PACs, and McCutcheon v. FEC (2014), which struck down other campaign finance restrictions.
End Citizens United is a group that has received endorsements from Barrack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Beto O’Rourke, and many other high profile democrats and is one of the largest grassroots funded committees out there.
Have you ever even heard of H.R. 1 For The People Act? It was the very first act of the 118th Congress in 2019 after Democrats won the majority in the 2018 election, and had 217 co-sponsors, easily passing the house with 234–193 PARTY LINE votes and it was reintroduced AGAIN in 2021, but got filibustered by Republicans AGAIN.
Why the fuck are you people so stupid?
The laws should have already been written in a way everyone is protected equally. Not leaving trans people to worry about where to piss. This is intentional. Democrats and Republicans ARE the problem.
It never ceases to amaze me how much of a piece of shit Biden is.
Genocide Joe moment.
Maybe we can show Joe what we think by supporting the most damaging politicians with even more heinous ethics.
That’ll show him.
I supported Biden and Kamala and if I was american I would’ve voted for them but since the election season is over, we can be more critical of their characters.
If only we could all be as morally pure as you
but the trolley problem…
