It’s surprising how dead in the water the communist movement in India seems to be. I thought the horrific state of affairs on the ground would translate to something bigger.

I have a huge blind spot for India. Why is it like this?

It’s such an unfortunate state of events, really. It’s such a head-scratcher for me personally, since China is now in a much stronger position than the Soviet Union ever was internationally. It feels like the left never truly recovered from the Perestroika and the advent of neoliberalism.

Since most people have no idea what China really is or does, the new red scare relies on reflecting local grievances onto a far-away China. For Europe and America, China is a capitalist hellscape that abuses racial minorities. In India, China has a caste system In Africa, China is super duper racist (don’t ask europeans what they still call chocolate marshmallows). In Asia, China controls the world through military power (they all have multiple US military bases).

Queer acceptance and HDI are heavily linked. It takes a couple of decades of satisfactory HDI and relative general security for violent homophobia to die down.
