Well it’s been working that way in practice for me for years.

I live in a dry climate, so I need to run a humidifier year round. I also have extremely hard tap water, and that’s all I put in the humidifier (along with a capful of sanitizer). Replace the wick every 60 days, or when it gets hard from calcium buildup). I’ve been doing it this way since 2021 without a single problem.
