Right but the actual quantities are arbitrary. A metre is a fixed fraction of the speed of light in a vacuum, but it’s an arbitrary fraction chosen because it was convenient. We could just as well have chosen it to be half or twice as long. Same with the second. And the kilogram, etc.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•“Filling a Gap in the Market: Genetic Modification of a Carrot with a Flared Base”English
4·2 months agoI’ve discovered a fundamental flaw in this study. A few reasons people use carrots is that they are cheap, and they are discreet. Presumably this variant would be significantly more expensive. Also, nobody thinks you’re buying a regular to pleasure yourself, not the cashier, not your wife.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Dude... Who the hell wrote all this cr@#?English
1·2 months agoMost humans have 3 working types of colour receptors that roughly correspond to red, green, and blue. A small number of people have a fourth, letting them see colours we can’t even conceive of. My friend has this and it makes me jealous.
I have been more often disappointed by sci-hub than satisfied, but maybe I just tend to look up more obscure or new research.

2·3 months agoCyclists are typically more likely to stop at a business because it’s just easier. In many cases bike lanes bring business, for the right kinds of businesses.

Technology@lemmy.zip•DuckDuckGo Is Hoping to Win Over AI-Hating SearchersEnglish
3·4 months agoIt used to be when you searched for something, it was information first, products second. If you searched bicycle, it would give you the Wikipedia page for bicycle, and then pages related to bicycles, some of which would be retailers. Now it’s the other way around, if the informational pages even show up at all.
Forget all the AI bullshit, this is my biggest gripe with search engines today. This is why people use ChatGPT - for all its faults - to search shit that Google used to answer. ChatGPT will confidently lie to you, but it least it gives you an answer instead of trying to sell something to you.

Science Memes@mander.xyz•Finally a solution to the Königsberg Bridge problem.English
4·4 months agoSurely it a river doesn’t go all the way around the earth. Rivers typically have one (or many) start points, where they are surrounded on three sides by land, meaning it’s possible to cross from one side to the other. Otherwise it’s just a strait or channel.
However, that assumes you are not on the land in between a fork in the river. In which case you would have to cross a bridge outside of Königsberg, and we might have to expand the problem to crossing every bridge on the continent once.
