Remember the meme? Deutschland, Duitsland, Tyskland are all regional variations on the same name. Allemagne and Germany are completely different names for the same country. Of course every language have their own way of saying “The United States of America”, but in essence it’s the same word, the same idea. Even Japan is Japón in Spanish, Ιαπωνία in greek, and so on. No one can pronounce my name correctly if I go abroad, but most of the time there is a regional variant I can use.

The question was what country is known “by the same name” by the most people around the world. You’re not going to find a place name that is pronounced and/or written exactly the same in every language. That’s how languages work.

  • It’s Διάδοχοι so rather Dee-AH-Do-©hee with accent on A, actually more like thee-AH-do-hee but that might sound a bit weird if you don’t have a feel for greek pronounciation. A small tip is that “i” is never pronounced as in “die” in greek but as “ee” (or as in “tin” if short).

Edit: I know modern greek, not ancient. The χ might have been more like a K (as the end of truck) in ancient times but I’m not sure. My suggestion above would be a lot closer to the correct pronunciation though.

Dee-AH-doh-kee like in ancient greek is probably what you want to use. Sorry for the confusion.

  • I also don’t think that not having morals would necessarily prevent me from caring if people are hypocritical, or thinking that other people are morally repugnant. I’m just thinking that they’re morally repugnant by some external set of morals which aren’t my own, obviously, some morals which I haven’t internalized, and which aren’t mine, probably.

Think you have it in you to write at least one paragraph where you don’t contradict yourself? You say you care, but have no internalized morals? Which is it?

Yes, having no morals would prevent you from caring if people are hypocritical – this is what is known as a moral stance. Without morals, there is nothing wrong with hypocrisy.

Sorry to keep you from your preferred activities, I just think you should really think this through before you mention it to anyone again.

  • Give Kagi a try if you haven’t already. It’ll cost you a little but you can try it for free (100 searches I think) and see how you like it. The advantage of paying for search is of course that you’re no longer the product, so no more selling your data to ad companies every time you search something, plus it’s actually in the providers’ interest to make searching a better experience for you. Just the fact that I never have to see Quora in my search results ever again (I can just block their site) would be worth the price for me. It’s just a little thing that made a huge difference for me since I search the web so many times daily, and for a long time now the results has been mostly useless.
