  • Inane. Intentionally convoluted, or someone following the absolute worst tutorials without bothering to understand anything about what they’re reading.

    I have questions:

    • Why are your configurations world readable?
    • Why are you setting the executable bit on a .conf file?
    • Why change the files group alongside the owner when you’ve just given the owner rxw and you’re going to set it back?
    • If it was 644 before, why 774?
    • Why even change the mode if you’re going to change the ownership?
    • Why do you want roots vimrc instead of your users
    • Why do you hate sudoedit
    • Why go out of your way to make this appear more convoluted than it actually is?

Even jokey comments can lead to people copying bad habits if it’s not clear they’re jokes.

This was a joke right? I was baited by your trolling?

  • I don’t watch a TON of these things, but I do enjoy them from time to time. The two bits I enjoy the most are vicarious rediscovery of something I enjoy, and getting a very different point of view on the same thing.

Generally when I watch these it’s stuff like “Classically trained musician listens to Megadeth for the first time”. I get reminded of some bits that I’ve grown accustomed to, and sometimes get a whole new perspective on something I’ve been enjoying for years.

I will say, I don’t get “Youtuber reacts to other youtubers reaction to some twitch streamer breakdancing” or “Gymrat listens to ABBA for the first time”.

  • I use a hardware password manager that connects over USB or bluetooth for most things. The few things that I use often I have a system for, and that system is popular culture.

Love “The Prisoner of Azkaban”? Initialize it, and add the publish date some where: HP&TPoA|1999

Starship troopers fan? Initialize a memorable quote. “The enemy can not push a button… if you disable his hand. Medic!”: Tecnpab…iydhh.M! Need numbers? Find a quote with numbers, or add the release year, or the number of times you watched it that one weekend where you and a friend watched it 32 times.

Like TV shows more? How about the fourth episode of family guy: S1-MindOverMuder-E4.

Metal Fan? I do love track three off of Metallica’s 1983 album: #3|Motorbreath-1983

    Etc.

  • In addition to many of the fine points made in other comments I think it’s silly to overlook the power of celebrity worship and weird-ass parasocial relationships with famous people.

There exists a large number of people who aren’t really interested in discussing <topic_x>, they just want to know what <favourite celebrity whos life I have deluded myself into thinking is attainable by me> thinks about the topic so that they can regurgitate it and feel like they’re “the same”.

I’m sure if Chappell Roan or whatever “the kids” think is cool these days had jumped to Mastodon we’d be seeing something very different. TBH I’m mildly surprised that we didn’t see more record labels standing up instances. It’s always boggled me that people have just trusted the service desperately trying to be known as “X” as an authority on identity.
