Most of us have celebs that make our skin crawl and we suspect will end up being accused of terrible things. What are yours?
For current day stars, Chris Pratt always struck me as someone I wouldn’t want to be in a room with alone.
Back in the day I was the only kid I knew who didn’t want to be on Jim’ll Fix It (hosted by Jimmy Saville), though at the time I couldn’t articulate why.
I just googled Chris Pratt. He’s certainly untrustworthy in some way.
And good spot on Saville!
Jimmy Kimmel has always given me the creeps and I have no explanation for this.
I think pop culture and fandom gives celebrities too much power over public consciousness, both when they appear nice and when it’s been discovered that they’re awful. But, at the end of the day, they’re just regular humans that the rest of us treat as gods.
I don’t know Neil Gaiman, Johnny Depp, or Amber Heard personally, so I don’t really have opinions or looked into those matters. It’s awful when people are abused, and I hope victims get the help that they need from people around them and within the legal system, which I know is imperfect. Personally, I’m not part of the jury or know any of these people, and I’m not in a position where I can help, so it’s a lot more mental bandwidth than I can personally handle. Sometimes I worry that celebrity drama, and the reports of violence that sometimes comes with that, is a form of entertainment for some people. But I also realize for other people, following drama is a way to confirm if justice has been served, or analyzing a victim’s lived experiences for self-protection against wolves in sheeps’ clothing, so I’m not judging anyone. What I’ll say is if someone in my life or who lives in my city needs help, I’m there for them.
Chris Rock had a bit in the 90s about how men are “only as faithful as their options”.
Spoiler alert: he cheated on his wife.
God that says a lot.
There is a part of me that assumes every celebrity is likely guilty … people who rise to that level of fame are often bad people.
I mean, even Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer are guilty 😬
Sure, maybe my generalizations are unfair or untrue, but there is something pragmatic happening about psychologically steeling myself, knowing I should be prepared for anyone to later be found guilty because of how common it seems among celebs.
Over 160 actors, writers, directors, etc. famously signed a petition to free Roman Polanski after he was arrested for unspeakable sexual crimes to a minor:
The petition was signed by many prominent individuals in the film industry including Guillermo del Toro, Martin Scorsese, Sam Mendes, David Lynch, Wes Anderson, Michael Mann, Woody Allen, Darren Aronofsky, Harrison Ford, Jeremy Irons, and Wong Kar-wai.
A full list is here.
Blimey didn’t know about the petition that’s bad
I’ve been proven right about many…
- Quentin Tarantino has been accused of bullying and mistreating women and defended polanski raping a child. He glorifies violence against women, and has strange sexual practices which is a big red flag
- Noel Fielding has kissed underage girls and his recent show appears to have been axed due to allegations.
- Marilyn Manson say no more.
Ones that creep me out are…
- Steve Buscemi. Mates with Tarantino and generally creeps me out
- Joaquin Phoenix. Wizard actor but there’s something off about him. I don’t think he’s a nice person.
Gary Busey lol
I just googled, couldn’t agree more
I need a shuddering emoji…
🤣
