Technology@lemmy.world•Bill to block publishers from killing online games advances in California | Publishers would have to offer “independent” play patch or refunds after server shutdowns.English
15·17 days agoAs currently amended, the act would not apply to completely free games and games offered “solely for the duration of subscription. Any other game offered for sale in California on or after January 1, 2027, would be subject to the law if it passes.
Looks like California will have special subscription only editions that’s different from the other states.

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•I Bought a “Junk” PSP From Japan: Here’s How It WentEnglish
30·1 month agoI loved my PSP. I really can’t believe the resolution was 480 × 272. It seemed a lot more high res than that.

Technology@lemmy.world•Google removes Doki Doki Literature Club! from the Play StoreEnglish
75·2 months agoIts Play listing was appropriately marked as “Mature 17+,” which means that children won’t be able to download it if their devices have parental controls. In addition, the developers clearly communicate that the game tackles serious issues. “This game is not suitable for children or those who are easily disturbed” is the first line of the game.
Looks like the developers and publisher did everything right. Play has a ton of games where you kill people. Google’s inconsistency shines again.

Pulse of Truth@infosec.pub•We Found a Ticking Time Bomb in macOS TCP Networking — It Detonates After Exactly 49 DaysEnglish
17·2 months agoThe only recovery was a reboot — which just restarted the 49.7-day countdown.
Saying ‘time bomb’ made me think this was unfixable after the expiration happened.
Pings still worked. Existing connections stayed alive. But anything that needed a new TCP socket simply failed.
Sounds like system admin hell for servers running on a string.

Technology@lemmy.world•This Espressif ESP32-Powered 4G "Smartphone," Programmed in the Arduino IDE, Packs The EssentialsEnglish
9·3 months agoI am really interested in where this project goes.
ESP32 projects are low powered. Not everything needs 5G and the latest Snapdragon.
I don’t really understand this article’s title. Third party app stores are available with their own payment or donation methods already.
Elsewhere, the tech giant is also introducing a new ‘program’ that aims to make sideloading ‘qualified’ app stores an easier affair. Third-party app stores that meet certain quality and safety benchmarks will boast a simplified installation flow, as seen in the image below.
Having ‘qualified’ app stores and ‘qualified’ apps gives Google more control, not less. The third party app stores available can now be blocked on devices.
It’s worth noting that the ‘Registered App Store program’ will begin outside the US first. It will expand to the US in the future, subject to court approval.
The EU’s policies on data is sickening.

Apple@lemmy.world•The touchscreen MacBook Pro rumors are exciting – but I'm worried it'll still be missing FaceID
5·3 months agoHowever, one key feature that apparently won’t make the leap to the Mac is Face ID, despite it being a vital part of the iPhone’s Dynamic Island. Gurman’s report makes no mention of Face ID, and it looks like Mac users will have to stick to Touch ID for the time being – especially considering Gurman previously claimed that Face ID on the Mac is “years away” from being realized.

2·4 months agoThank you for the explanation.
I will continue to use it and provide feedback. So far, really great.
I nearly take all my notes in markdown. I am always excited to try another open source markdown program.
HelixNotes is super polished.
Thanks!

1·4 months agoMe again. Last time tonight, I promise.
My favorite features so far, making the edit toolbar disappear in source mode and Focus mode. Quick access is also really useful.
One more thing I don’t like, it was adding a header to my edited notes.
Example:
--- id: "9242199e-992b-4c58-9b4f-85a6949d424d" title: "Books" tags: [] pinned: false created: 2026-02-15T04:32:13.600656+00:00 modified: 2026-02-15T04:32:17.240423+00:00 ---This doesn’t look great in MacOS preview. This might be one of those things that it was simplest to just add this directly to the file rather than creating some kind of database or a bunch of dot files. Again, not a deal breaker for me. Would adding it to the bottom be possible instead?
Thank you.

Imagine how many jobs all that money could have provided instead of laying off thousands of employees.
