Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•If God was real (just go with it), then how he's portrayed in the Bible might not even be how he actually is.
3·7 days agoAnd we aren’t even talking about gnosticism yet! What if God was straight up evil and trapped us in the material world. All this stuff about what you can eat or wear or how to worship is just a distraction, luring us with the promise of a false heaven to keep us from realizing enough about how the world really works to escape the material world and escape suffering

8·14 days agoYou will enjoy “the old guard” as it centers around badass immortal women (with some badass immortal men as supporting characters)
I think I get it.
Not sure about “cell” but “Nature” and “Science” are both names of famous and prestigious scientific magazines. Getting published in either of them would be the highlight of many scientists’ careers.
However, “Nature cell and science” appears to be a far less prestigious scientific magazine and publishing in it is probably easier and far less impressive.
The joke is that publishing in the one, lower end, magazine sounds like publishing in one of the higher end ones

news@lemmings.world•Communities where women marry multiple men exist all over the world. They often have one thing in commonEnglish
3·1 month agoYep, that was the only commonality I could pull out of the article lol. It was fascinating how different the communities were

news@lemmings.world•Communities where women marry multiple men exist all over the world. They often have one thing in commonEnglish
8·1 month agoThe article was interesting but really did not make clear one single common point. Unless you count that they all involved women partnering with multiple men lol.
Should have started the image with the candle perhaps.
I would simply have skipped the candle as it was the least essential to the joke

Technology@lemmy.world•'Windmill': China tests world’s first megawatt-level airship to capture high windsEnglish
2·2 months agoYa that makes sense but looking it up that doesn’t seem to be a major source of wind and I don’t know why not. Probably has an effect but is order of magnitudes weaker than solar heating and Coriolis effect (which having looked it up seems to be the #2 cause of wind).

Technology@lemmy.world•'Windmill': China tests world’s first megawatt-level airship to capture high windsEnglish
19·2 months agoTypically wind is dissipated by friction losses with the surface I think (bleeding off speed and energy by making waves, waving trees, and just rubbing against the ground) and wind is generated by heat from the sun (warm air expanding pushing against cold air, creating pressure differentials across thousands of miles).
Because wind is quick to regenerate and this does nothing to stop that the result is probably a pretty small drop in average wind speeds around the new mill and no greater ramifications than slightly less pollen travel in the spring.
Oh that was a fascinating read! Thank you

1·2 months agoThis is a wild flattening of history and an insane level of whataboutism. Absolutely not. This is neither accurate nor ethical to normalize one of the most brutal chattel slavery systems in history and imply that it is the same as what any other civilization did. To draw direct comparison to their neighbors, where the Spartans would routinely murder their slaves in cold blood and had the practice enshrined in law, the Achaemenid Persians practiced something much more akin to modern prison labor; Still a morally dubious practice as best but not even close to the deeply evil things the Spartans were doing.

5·3 months agoAs well they should have! The spartan society was built on slavery. And not just regular slavery but some of the most brutal slavery in history. The only thing Xerxes did wrong was not kill enough Spartans.
