  • It’s hard to say.

For discussion threads I think it makes sense and that’s what I really want to see grow. When we only had films it was easier since you had only a few new films per week, and even less if you focused only on the blockbusters/comic book movies.

Now with TV shows you’ve got a new episode every week.

If you look at Reddit communities you had great discussion and memes week to week, and it only worked with folks hyper focused on the TV show.

Ideally I’d have separate communities for each show, but that would be spread super thin.

  • If you’re a fan of Comic Book TV & Movies I want to highlight,

We’re discussing the latest MCU films and TV shows. Agatha All Along is airing right now, but we’re also excited for next year with Captain America: Brave New World & Thunderbolts*.

We’re also open to discussing Sony’s terrible Marvel films like Venom and Madam Web. And I’m looking forward to Sony’s excellent Marvel films like Spider-verse.

Of course to be fair I’ve also reignited,

It’s just discussing The Penguin TV series at the moment, but as James Gunn and Peter Safran put together their DCU I expect we’ll talk about it a lot more. Also the upcoming Joker sequel. If it’s DC it’s fair game.

And of course for either community if you just want to visit after watching the latest film or TV show, that works too.

  • Re Concentration I’m not concerned that it is as of yet a problem. However I do think it is also a larger problem for Mastodon and other user-centric platforms than it is to Lemmy and other community-cetric platforms.

If a Mastodon user wants to leave their server there are migration pains. If your server makes a controversial change, you may have to migrate. As a follower if something goes wrong I have to remember that I was following Ada & Bob, but maybe Bob now goes by Bobby.

However as a Lemmy user I can just abandon my server and be done with it. If my server makes a controversial change, I can just leave. As a community follower can watch as Star Trek Memes becomes Risa, or Risa becomes Ten Forward. The names changed completely but it’s easy to find my community again.

  • It’s a shame it isn’t discussed in the article, but I wonder “What about TV?”

I watch a lot more TV shows than I do films, not just because TV is longer but usually TV has the more interesting story to tell.

That isn’t to say films aren’t interesting, it’s just that I wonder if the shift is the dividing line between generations. Films were where all the big stars were. TV was seen as a stepping stone. Now TV has a similar and sometimes even higher level of prestige.

The article does touch on length for a moment, but doesn’t dig in. When it comes to TV you might only need to watch 22 minutes, 44 minutes, maybe an hour to get a solid feel for where the story is going. Plus it has a logical stopping point.

For a film you might get 20 minutes in but you’re not sure. Should you stick with it? I suppose better films aren’t usually this way, but should you watch just a little more and find out?

Both have their place. Both can be great.

  • I’ve not read the books and after watching part 1 I was left confused why everyone loved them. I didn’t dislike the film, it was just fine, but it didn’t get me excited for part 2. Sure I’d watch it, but if it were delayed or cancelled I wouldn’t have minded.

For me part 2 is everything I wanted in a film. I would nearly go so far to tell someone unsure about the films to skip part 1 and just watch part 2. In reality I think doing that would be a bad idea, but part 2 is better than part 1 in nearly every way.

  • Occasional weed use is how I use weed.

I have plenty of legal 5mg edibles to choose from. I usually grab a can that contains 20 or so, share with friends and it lasts me a few months.

Sometimes friends and I share vapes, both flower and liquid/oil based. I have no idea how strong they might be. Sometimes a puff or two and I’m set for the night. Sometimes it’s nowhere near enough and I’ll have more.

Never am I anxious. Never are friends of mine overly anxious. If someone has too much, they take a minute, they take a moment, hell they take an hour if they need.

Everyone has to learn their tolerance, just like we had to learn for alcohol. Maybe it’s a bit more complicated with marijuana, but it’s the same idea.

Also weed all the time is a terrible idea. As is weed never. (Although ultimately it’s up to you, as long as you’re happy and it isn’t ruining your life.)

    Excellent unpopular opinion.

  • The Matrix is actually an interesting thing if I recall correctly.

The Wachowskis really wanted to tell a huge story, they had so many ideas and multiple sequels across many mediums.

They had funding issues, or there was little confidence the film would be a success, so the very ending of the first Matrix is just sorta tacked on.

Neo in the phone booth telling the machines he’s about to change everything as he just flys away, completely breaking their reality. It’s a “and they all lived happily ever after” ending.

Of course The Matrix was then hugely successful.

So now the Wachowskis get to tell the story they intend, hell they get to do pretty much whatever they want.

As a result Neo is weirdly much less of a badass (but still badass) as he sort of finds himself during the events of Matrix Reloaded.

But if course I bring this all up because the Wachowskis did get to make all the things they wanted. Reloaded & Revolutions were at least part of the story. The Animatrix and other shorts, part of the story. The multimedia continuation of the story where you could jump into a video game to see part of the story, or into a an MMO and live in the Matrix.

The Matrix was always envisioned as this huge thing. It just turned out that having the idea and executing on that idea is hard. The films didn’t quite live up to expectations (still good mind you, but a step down). Part of the films “missing” with the idea that it would be something you can experience in a video game. The story continuing on in an MMO that took a while to launch and then had major issues.

Which is all to say sometimes even with good intentions and ideas, it’s just difficult to get an idea perfectly onto screen.

  • It’s also a (US) election year, which tends to just be crazier than normal. It’s possible Reddit is tweaking things, but it’s also possible that election years bring out the worst in people. I definitely noticed a change back in 2016, less in 2020 but also COVID made everything weird.

There is also the obvious exodus of users in the past year. I’m not saying it’s a lot in terms of numbers, and I’m sure they were replaced, but I suspect some shift in demographics.

Also Twitter. Twitter had a huge rage problem before Muskrat took over, but now it is soooooo much worse. For some reason people don’t leave and then I’m sure carry over that rage to other sites.

  • I’m not well versed with lore but “What If: Iron Man: Demon in an Armor” has Tony and Victor swap bodies. It happens when they are younger so they have different paths and that story isn’t the one that is going to be told here, but… technically yes.

But also keep in mind it’s fine for the MCU to do things a little different. In Multiverse of Madness we was the “Illuminati” in a way similar to existing material, but still wholly unique. Additionally we got characters like Mordo who get new arcs and growth that differs from any existing media

While I do expect this to be a little desperate on Marvels part, they’re also bringing back the Russo brothers, I think it’s also a way to bring hype back to Marvel and the idea of the multiverse. The future is mutants and Secret Wars will be a great way to get that going so I think we’re going to speedrun it and a cheesy strat like bringing back RDJ is a way to do that.

In terms of story I don’t think they’re going to ignore that he played Tony Stark/Iron Man. If we’re going to play with the Multiverse (and we are) then a variant of Tony is fair game.
