& also you probably know to spec it appropriately; most slow laptops I see have 8 gigs ram.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Will online only "Device Activation" become the norm for every device in the future? / Will everything require an app in the future?
2·1 year agoReminder that Cable and Broadcast TV are the same quality now, so if you (or your parents) watch TV, you can set up a box that just connects to the HDMI port and captures everything. It even gets metadata so you can see what channel the best stuff is on, like PBS kids. Total cost is around 100-200$ and after that it’s free.

1·1 year agoI gave a friend a raspberry pi a while ago and just this last week they asked me to come and set it up with Pihole for them. They’re very happy to not have ads on their TV anymore. The only hiccup has been that their network connected cat litterbox (lol) doesn’t tell them when the cat has pooped anymore.

4·1 year agoYeah up until then I though he was a cool guy; real life iron man and whatnot. That baseless accusation was just so incredibly out of character it made me question his character, and then his later actions made me realize it was always just a character.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there an equivalent of solar panels for radio waves?
8·1 year agoYes, these devices exist. But, IR is significantly, even several orders of magnitude, less powerful from the sun than visible and UV light. The only applications derive from receiving power from human sources that are bright enough, some examples are here in the other comments.
Even then, I have doubts that human IR emitters produce enough power for anything but the most highly efficiently engineered device, outside of a microwave.
It’s important in the sense that if it’s “just gang shit” then people think it’s less random, and so they have some agency to avoid it, which makes it less scary. They’re also not in social groups even close to gangs, so it’s not something that would ever happen to them.

techsupport@lemmy.world•Bitwarden UI update? Is it ugly or is it just me? And why do I have to hunt for the tiny "fill" button now? When I click the entry "View Login" is now the default? Not an improvement.
2·1 year agoI actually really like the new UI. The settings menus are more legible and seem better organized now too.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it worth investing if I can only contribute $50 a month?
4·1 year ago7-8% is the standard value used after taking inflation into account. It’s really 10%, but inflation eats 3% yearly, on average. Using the metric this way also conveniently means that the value you calculate for the end of compounding (in 35 years) is interpretable in todays dollars.
So 7% interest on 50$ monthly for 35 years means total principal of 21k$ and total of 83k$ (todays value).

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Does anyone else feel like tech peaked around 10+ years ago?
8·1 year agoI just had to book a flight.
Frontier forces you to download an app now to check in (there is a well hidden option to do it on web, but the page never loads on laptop nor mobile in multiple browsers).
I tried to rent a parking spot, and 2/4 places would not load quotes at all (again web and mobile and multiple browsers). I probably would’ve used one of the two that didn’t load if their sites had worked. Their loss I guess.
I’d just like it to not feel like each interaction I have with technology, and I guess by extension the world, is becoming increasingly adversarial. The tech itself seems to keep getting better though.

15·1 year agoIt is surprising that the presidential Democratic candidate finally lost a popular vote after 20+ years, but currently it appears that she just lost. Sure, do a recount of a sample of suspected precincts. I am going to continue to believe that this is a conspiracy theory until substantiated evidence of fraud is provided.
As an aside, those images are small and I could barely read them (zooming didn’t increase image size).
.world and .ml are servers. I’d recommend choosing a server related to your topic (programming.zone if it’s comp sci related, for example), and try to avoid piling into the largest ones (.world and .ml, etc.).

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•How exactly does one eat 1500 calories a day?
1·2 years agoYes! It’s not so much the work itself, but the mental effort tied to it. After a couple weeks of repetition something becomes habit, that mental effort is diminished.

Yeah, it’s fine for now. If you’re doing anything more than the absolute basic, you’ll need 16+ now (on Win 11). Somewhat related, but my work computer was stuck, slow, and crashing at 99% utilization on 8GB until I added a card (my money). Now it stays around 85% on 16GB.
