Lemmy, Piefed and Mbin are all entirely different and unique attempts at creating a self-hostable software package for a reddit-like website. In the same way that Reddit was trying to be like Digg, but with it’s own codebase starting from scratch.
Despite using different codebases, Lemmy, Piefed and Mbin are all compatible with each other, like if you could leave comments on reddit threads from your Digg account while on Digg.
The reason they can talk to each other is they were all built with one thing in common: at the core of them is something called the ActivityPub Protocol, which in simple terms means the way they send messages, make posts, etc, are all using one standard, so they can all understand each other, like speaking the same language. An upvote from lemmy is understood as an upvote by Piefed, same for comments, posts, etc.
A similar thing on the web that functions just like that is E-mail. No matter what email provider you use, you can send an email to any other email provider, and it all just works because at the core, Gmail, Yahoo Mail, AOL mail, Proton Mail, etc, they all use the standardized E-mail Protocol.
Just like with email, where you can’t log into a Gmail account from the Yahoo Mail log-in page, you also can’t log into a lemmy account from a Piefed login page.
But if you’re familiar with how you can use an E-Mail client, like Thunderbird or Outlook Express to log into almost any email account regardless of where it’s hosted, so to with lemmy/piefed mobile apps, which only act as a front-end like Thunderbird.
Each lemmy/piefed instance is like it’s own email provider (instance just means server, a server is a computer that hosts the software and makes it available on the internet for us to find). So lemmy.world is like Gmail, but piefed.social is an entirely different provider, equivalent to Yahoo mail. You could access either from a mobile app, which acts as a client, but if you went to them with a web browser, you’d have to go to lemmy.world directly if that’s where your account was, similar to how you would have to for email.
All of these servers are ‘federated’ with each other, which basically means once they establish a connection, they will continually offer new data to each other automatically. So Lemmy.world will always send out to piefed.social any new posts, comments, or upvotes that occur on lemmy.world, as well as pass forward any posts, comments, or upvotes that any lemmy.world user makes on a community hosted on piefed.social.
Lemmy, Piefed, and Mbin are open-source, which means they are developed collaboratively online for anyone to see or participate in (if you’re familiar with how Linux is developed, it is very similar to that).
As for who develops these softwares, you can see who has contributed to them on their respective development platforms.
- Lemmy is mainly developed by Dessalines and Nutomic on Github.
- Piefed is mainly developed by Rimu (and others) on Codeberg
- Mbin is developed on Github
But as for the instances themselves, they are owned by the individuals who run the physical servers that each instance runs on.
There are still active cinema and TV show communities, the ones from lemm.ee mostly moved over to piefed.social.

3·4 days agoThe most effective non-violent action we can take is joining local mutual aid groups, reading Full Spectrum Resistance for more details, and ultimately preparing and organizing for a General Strike.
The country would be brought to its knees if suddenly deprived of profit and labor. That tactic was extremely effective in Chile in 2019, and had they not fallen for the trick of liberal reform, they would’ve had a successful revolution on their hands with virtually no bloodshed.
If you aren’t in a union (or even if you are, it’s worth dual-carding), please consider joining the IWW to unionize your workplace (bonus: you’ll get higher wages, better benefits, and more time off if you succeed!) to strengthen a general strike if we manage to enact one, as most unions have a strike fund that can supplement your income during a general strike to make it more financially bearable (you should also save as much money as you can reasonably do, so it can also be used to keep yourself afloat during a strike).
And for our international friends, you should join one as well, as fascism is gaining momentum globally. If your country isn’t listed below, just contact the IWW directly in the link above, and they’ll help you set up a new local branch.

Buy European@feddit.uk•Wero Tracker — European Payment Adoption ProgressEnglish
51·5 days agoPer wikipedia:
Wero is managed by banks via their mobile apps. This creates a dependency on iOS (Apple) and Android (Google) systems. Consequently, Wero exchanges its reliance on payment networks like Visa and Mastercard, for a reliance on two Big Tech giants—Apple and Google, with the new dependency focusing on online availability and distribution through their application stores.
Needing to rely on two pro-fascist tech companies seems like a particularly bad idea. Wero also does not appear to be anonymous.
A better alternative to Wero is GNU Taler, which is a properly open standard that is a true anonymous digital cash, and offers real independence from tech-bro corporations.
We have a community that discusses GNU Taler over at !money@slrpnk.net

RetroGaming@lemmy.world•What is the cheapest console to get and collect for that still holds up?English
1·7 days agoI had no issue making Wii Sports Resort with motion plus.
Looking at it again, I misremembered the Dolphin wiki entry for it. Apparently it only has problems unless using Bluetooth Passthrough mode, which I didn’t really want to mess with to get working with my bluetooth dongle.
you can completely erase the pain point of this by using Playnite as front end (in windows) and configuring your emulators (Dolphin, PCSX2 etc) to start full screen WITH controller support started at run time, along with enabling hot key macros for shutting down game and returning to dashboard etc. Playnite has native scripting control.
Unfortunately I wouldn’t be able to use Playnite, as I’ve fully sworn off Windows personally in favor of Linux. However, even if Playnite were on Linux, I’m honestly not sure I’d go that route for myself. Even though it’s fully configurable powerful, with macros that can be set up to get things just right, and specific versions of Dolphin may be more ideal for a particular game, I’m kind’ve at a point in my life where that type of fine-tuning and tinkering is far less appealing compared to when I was younger, where I would’ve seen it as a fun challenge.
The original merit of consoles was that they’re simple plug-n-play devices that don’t require much though to use, and that aspect is really appealing to me nowadays, as it leaves me more time to troubleshoot or experiment with non-gaming things, like tinkering to get a good audio production setup going on my Linux PC with certain outboard audio (which can be time consuming to figure out). So for me, a jail broken Wii really fits the bill of a simple box that I can just turn on and know everything will just work, and no update will mess anything up and require me to look into it.
But that’s just me! For others, that tinkering and the end result of it is highly gratifying, and more power to em, I say :)
Maybe I only tried Impossible after they perfected their formula, but in all the meals I’ve cooked with it, like burgers, chili, stuffed peppers, beef stroganoff, meatballs, etc, I wouldn’t be able to tell that it’s not real beef in either flavor or texture unless someone told me.
I cannot say the same for some other alternatives like soy curls, tvp, beyond meat, all of which have a certain ‘off’ flavor. Beyond meat as an example uses pea protein, which seems more difficult to mask.
The only other alternative that I’ve found that can convincingly be beef is Quorn, which if cooked with a bullion cube or marmite can very effectively replace ground beef in most recipes.
Oh, and those mushroom based Meati steaks are also really good and beefy. The texture is softer than real steak, but it works great for steak tacos.

Videos@lemmy.world•Gadgets For People Who Don't Trust The GovernmentEnglish
51·8 days agoYou yourself posted about how 31 people died in ICE custody. The video maker shows how privately owned Flock cameras which are installed around the country are used by ICE without a warrant to track and detain people; he has shown in past videos how to effectively trick those cameras into not recognizing your license plate, and in the OP video now how to detect the cameras.
And you’re calling him a conspiracy theorist without having even watched it? The hell dude.
If you haven’t tried Impossible beef yet, I’d highly recommend it. It’s a 1 to 1 replacement for me (I actually prefer it and that’s coming from someone who loved beef)
It may as well be equivalent to lab grown, but is already widely available, affordable (especially on sale), and uses tremendously less resources than the real deal. Def recommend giving it a shot!

World News@lemmy.world•Europe’s generals are warning people to prepare for war || EconomistEnglish
7·13 days agoAnyway, drones have reshaped tactics so much that i doubt that those tanks would be useful for anything today.
Drones (which also have their limitations) have made the old tanks specifically much less useful, but armored vehicles are still dearly needed in that conflict, especially APC’s (you can’t easily acquire and hold territory if you can’t get troops to that territory quickly and safely), and those are in very short supply, as evidenced by many videos of Russia now using motorcycles, golf carts, ATVs, and old cars for assaults and troop transport.
they still hold a few cards. They do have a nuclear arsenal and they really want us to believe that they are stupid enough to use them in case of need.
The same could be said of EU countries with nukes, but I’m not sure how that’s relevant in regards to them attacking the EU, as they can’t realistically use their nukes offensively without triggering mutual destruction, and no country is lining up to invade Russia to trigger them to use those defensively.
They have a solid net of spies, mostly around ex USSR countries and they pretty much found the way to weaponize our ellections.
As effective as their spy and propaganda network is, I don’t think they’d be able to get enough EU member states to get to the point of basically disarming themselves and welcoming a Russian invasion force.
Also… they dont have any problem rising slave armies and throwing them at us…
You mean North Korean soldiers? Jong-Un sent a relatively small number of troops over (30k out of their 1.3 million strong army) in exchange for technological help from Russia, and because it offered an opportunity for the North Korean military to get some combat experience. It is extremely unlikely they would commit a significant portion of their military to helping conquer the EU when they’re always so paranoid of South Korea invading them.

5·13 days agoHow do you figure the China/Russia combo are going to overcome Europe still having nukes? That they’ll just gamble that no one will have the guts to use them and roll across the border?
The entire weight of the Russian military and decades of surplus are struggling to incapacitate a single, relatively poor country that’s operating on table-scrap military hardware that the wealthy EU countries are willing to part with. China are propping them up because it’s both highly profitable and politically expedient, but if anything, Russia has shown that they’d be the equivalent of Mussolini’s Italy if they became involved in a larger conflict; a liability that needs to be bailed out time and time again after constant fuck-ups.
I could see China making a go for Taiwan, but all of Europe? I’d have to see some much more concrete data that shows they’d be able to survive economically losing the EU as a trading partner during the course of such a prolonged conflict.

World News@lemmy.world•Europe’s generals are warning people to prepare for war || EconomistEnglish
27·13 days agoFrom the satellite evidence I’ve seen of Russia’s military stockpiles, they’ve basically run out of their war chest of tanks, APC’s, and artillery pieces, with most of them having been blown up in Ukraine.
Their ability to create new ones is limited and slow, meaning they are extremely weak militarily, and I very much doubt they’d be able to wage an effective war against NATO in 4 years, as the general in the article suggests.
From what I understand, the limitation in speed/scalability for lemmy/piefed/mbin is the database, not the back end language, so the specific language used appears to matter much less than it would seem.
Piefed has some some pretty great features over lemmy, but for the sysadmin side of things, it has a noticeable improvement regarding network resource usage, and potentially raw speed.
Piefed also appears to be less buggy overall. As an example, Lemmy has suffered from a persistent memory leak that’s been around for years, with no fix in sight. You can see the opinion of our sysadmin who has been running slrpnk.net (lemmy instance) for 5 years now to find that just because lemmy is built in a memory-safe language, it doesn’t automatically translate to a good experience.
I know its been a few days since y’all posted this, but I wasn’t logged in when I saw it, and I just need to lay down to ya how much I laughed at this damn thing. Damn if you don’t find the best memes, Track

4·18 days agoPOM is a solid brand of OC, since it sprays in a concentrated stream instead of a mist/spray (the mist requires a bit less aim, but it doesn’t work in the wind, and can often blow back into your own face, or be inhaled if used inside a room in a house). Their big cans are restricted in a handful of states, but the smaller pocket models are 50 state legal.
Good luck.

Games@lemmy.world•What free to play games can run smoothly on my old laptop?English
2·19 days agoI guess I do sorta have the equivalent of a tactical nuke in my back pocket when it comes to low-spec Linux game recommendations 😅
Ahh, damn. I did quite enjoy Shadow of the Colossus (haven’t hit ICO yet). Shame to hear TLG is so troubled, I haven’t been compelled to pick up newer consoles, and with that news, even less so.
I bought a PS3 years after it was released, partly just to play MGS4 since I was a big fan of the OG and the 3rd game.
Couldn’t have been more disappointed, personally. It has a few highlights, but overall I found the story just felt really off, even for a Kojima game. It was particularly boring, convoluted, and unsatisfying. Honestly wished I had just watched it on youtube instead.
Other than that, I kinda struggled to find other PS3 exclusives that peaked my interest. The Ratchet & Clank games it had are pretty good. Motorstorm is a great racer, but other than that… At least for my interests, the rest of the library is pretty underwhelming. Ended up selling it without regrets.

Glad you found it helpful! Though for people new to this, depending on their tech savvyness, less info might be more.
An average user doesn’t really need to know exactly how Lemmy/piefed work to actually use it effectively, and depending on how interested they are in learning how things work, the longer explanation I gave may be off-putting to some people, or make it seem too complex.
As an example; I’m not sure most people actually know how email works at all on a technical level, they just know that if they log into their Gmail and put the right address for the person they’re trying to reach, everything works. They may not even understand that the @whatever.com part means their email is being sent to a totally different server (if it’s not also Gmail) being hosted by different corporations somewhere else in the world, or how exactly an email is shuffled across all the different ISP’s, cabling, repeaters, etc. Explaining the details of all those things would make email seem horribly complex and off-putting to many. Without any of the that knowledge, as long as they know just the steps to accomplish what they want, all is well.
With Lemmy or Piefed, an equivalent could be just sending them a link to a known reliable general instance (Piefed.social would be a good choice) and telling them to create an account there and to use it just like they would reddit. For the most part, that’s all anyone really needs to know to have a pretty good experience. They may wonder why different users have different domain names at the end of their name, and if they ask you could explain further, but they’ll still be able to navigate around, comment, find communities and all the rest without knowing, which should lessen the feeling that it’s complicated.
