Tamo240@programming.devto UK Politics@feddit.uk•UK Supreme Court rules legal definition of a woman is based on biological sex - live updates18·1 month agoThe courts can only interpret the law. The wording of the law refers to ‘sex’ i.e. Biological sex, not gender, hence the ruling.
Only the media is talking about the ‘definition of a woman’. This is not what the ruling is on.
That isn’t to say that the equalities act shouldn’t be changed to also include gender, I strongly believe it should and hope against hope that the Labour government will, but it is not in the supreme court’s power to enact new law.
Lack of understanding of the legal system leads to a lot of misdirected anger, I’m on your side, but be angry at the right people.

Tamo240@programming.devto Technology@lemmy.world•I'm Tired of Pretending Tech is Making the World BetterEnglish4·3 months agoI disagree, I think the removal of ads is often painted as a benefit that had inherent value. Look at YouTube premium or Prime video. Both haven’t actually improved their offering, just made it worse by introducing ads and insisting users that don’t want to see ads have to pay for the privilege of not being advertised to.
This means the total price adds up to higher than 100% of the product value, because it’s a ‘premium’ version that comes without advertisement inconvenience.
Tamo240@programming.devto Technology@lemmy.world•I'm Tired of Pretending Tech is Making the World BetterEnglish6·3 months agoPaying for the product and paying to not be inconvenienced by ads have become separate things. The first is standard business, the second is extortion.
Tamo240@programming.devto Doctor Who@lemmy.world•Doctor Who is ready to take the long way around again in new season 2 trailerEnglish1·3 months agoI think what you’re trying to say is that the social commentary has lost a lot of nuance, as well as the general quality of the writing going down, in which case I agree. Kinda toeing the line of the ‘everything is woke now’ crowd though, to which I would say you haven’t seen/understood much Doctor Who if you think social issues are only recently a part of the stories.
For the record the Rosa Parks ep was one of my favourites for Jodie, but it’s a low bar.

Tamo240@programming.devto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What would you say is the most unsung "plot hole" in Harry Potter?47·3 months agoThe plot has already being discussed at length. I want to talk about quidditch.
Quick recap, in quidditch, scoring goals scores 10 or 20 points, catching the snitch scores 150 points, and ends the game. This effectively means that the only way a team can catch the snitch and lose is if they are over 150 points behind.
As a result of this, logically the seaker should not attempt to catch the snitch if the score is this unfavourable, meaning the game is always decided by the seaker, and nothing anyone else is doing remotely matters. Remember also we see the audience is rarely able to see what the seeker is doing from the stands.
Now you may say “what about the world cup in book 4, Krumm catches the snitch and still loses”. This can only be attributed to Krumm got mad at his team, or maybe bored, otherwise he should just wait and see if his team can score a goal or two. If the other team’s seaker catches the snitch you lose anyway, so why even try until it’s going to win you the game? Maybe he was showing off to Hermione.
We also know for certain that this happens very rarely, as the odds given to the twins by Ludo Bagman are very high, leading to a big payout. Therefore quidditch is entirely decided by something that happens well out of sight of the audience, and would be terrible to watch or play.
As an aside, the rules around catching the snitch leading to a draw are never mentioned, but I assume they have some penalty shootout system
It definitely can, but it won’t if you’re looking for it
Can you explain what this is, so that I don’t have to google it and end up on a list?
Tamo240@programming.devto Doctor Who@lemmy.world•Season 1 (Series 14) Episode 5: "Dot and Bubble"English1·1 year agoWith the exception on Boom, every episode this season seems to have a huge pacing problem. To me every single one seems to drag with very little happening, until suddenly there is a massive climax that invariably is unsatisfying and makes no sense, before the episode abruptly ends. How is this the same show that gave us complex stories like Midnight or Heaven Sent in the same amount of time?
Quick rundown:
- Space Babies: Everyone is scared of the monster, until suddenly the monster was made by a computer error and needs to be saved
- The Devils Chord: Jinx Monsoon is stealing all the music, until suddenly they have a ridiculous music battle, which the Doctor somehow loses, but the beatles return to play a note and the day is saved
- 73 Yards: A great horror concept of Ruby being followed by a mysterious entity, that turns out to be herself as an old women making herself lonely for her entire life??
- Dot and Bubble: Turns out the Dot hates humanity and is killing them off, but instead of instantly braining them all, as it is clearly capable of, it creates giant slugs to eat them? And the people don’t want to be saved?
I genuinely think a lot of the themes and concepts in this series are very good, but the scripts need to be tightened up, instead of juggling so many metaphors and societal commentaries in each episode.
I actually liked this one more than I thought I would from the trailer, but once again the resolution just leaves me confused and unsatisfied.
I completely disagree that it is not using anything that identifies the universe. The visual language of Star Wars is very strong, and even besides the obvious storm troopers this show captured it in its’ production design in a way that very few recent introductions have.
I would argue that almost any frame could be immediately identified as star wars even if you hadn’t seen the show.
