Have you seen the capacity of a phone with cracked screen, lately? Slap Syncthing on it, if you can’t be bothered with PostmarketOS, for a cheap, low-power, solar compatible backup solution or a Kiwix server or something. I ran an email server on one for years. People toss out amazing things these times.

It looks worse than it used to. It just didn’t snap, do what you might. Eventually I screwdrove it to this condition (can’t get any worse than dead, right?)
Xiaomi Poco X3 Pro. I removed the camera multiple times, it’s really easy - unglue the back cover (ok that bit is non-easy), unscrew the mobo cover, unsnap the 3 cables. I needed to remove it because the UART pads are under it (for porting PostmarketOS).
My current router is an ancient laptop running NixOS. Ethernet in via the Ethernet port, and out via a USB converter. It probably could serve as a WiFi AP too, but currently I have a dumb OpenWRT in bridge mode for that.
The same laptop also selfhosts Prosody, coturn, LiveKit and stuff.
I don’t really see how a proper router would be better than that.
I do that. Teams webclient works fine, Office web version suffices for basic things, VS Code works perfectly on Linux, and for the rest, I have a https://devbox.microsoft.com/
Running Linux affords me the possibility to be snide when inevitably something fails to work right on coworkers’ Windows machines. When my Linux box fails to work right, at least I know how to fix it.
Which other options did you consider? By any chance, could you compare it with Element or Snikket or Conversations (or other Matrix or SMPP clients}?
