  • And this is why lemmy will never get close to what reddit was. On top of the cumbersome registration process and difficulty of navigating the fediverse for the non-tech people, there is also the issue of de-federation and censorship. This is no better then reddit unfortunately. It makes me sad, this really seemed like a good idea, but the implementation is so poor.

People were saying it won’t matter what instance you choose, everything is federated and you choose what you want to see, but clearly the instance admins make that choice for you and it absolutely does matter the instance you choose.

  • At work I guess you only do work related stuff, so at the end of the day it’s only work-related data that the browser has access to. Why would it matter to you?

99.9% of my the personal browsing I do is in firefox both on phone and desktop, but on work laptop I use Edge because 1. the work web-apps seem to favour chromium based browsers and 2. it’s not my data so I don’t really care about the privacy of my company’s data, they have a data privacy officer to worry about that.

  • It would be good, but not better. Why do people like apps so much? I hate them… Like, there is so much browsers can do these days, there is no point in having to install so much crap on our phones…

Why would I have to download an app that has so many permissions, syphon my data, run in the background and drain my battery, when 90% of the stuff can stay in the browser?

The only few advantages I can think off that an app can bring are the following:

    • they can work offline, some of them at least, half my apps probably won’t
    • better security, that’s mostly for bank apps, not really needed for many other cases
    • marginally faster load times
    • higher complexity, devs have a bit more freedom I guess

Most use cases don’t require either of these.
