gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Uplifting News@lemmy.world•UN assembly votes overwhelmingly to back two-state solution to Israel-Palestinian conflictEnglish284·1 day agoThis requires Israel removing Netanyahu and his far right alliance from power, and Palestine building a stable elected government.
Netanyahu might be removed in the next election because Israelis are fed up with his military aggression that has failed to eliminate Hamas or free the remaining hostages. This is an election year.
The Palestinian authority has to be completely dismantled and rebuilt with new elections and authority to properly govern. Abbas is about to enter the 21st year of his 4 year term.

Just send them a link to an interesting post. The more people get used to seeing interesting content on Lemmy, Masto, etc., the more likely they are to think it’s not “weird” and maybe make an account to comment on something.

There may be a way to use that in this community, ask users to refer to it when necessary.
Some companies have an accelerometer in the device itself. This one is just a BT chip that pulls the location and acceleration data on your phone itself, as well as a ton of other permissions and invasive data trackers, as well as an agreement that the insurance co can share collected data with third party partners. Unfortunately these days it’s pretty boilerplate stuff.
I got one of those “safe driver” transceivers to save money on insurance. It required an app, which I figured would be like a simple bridge that uploads the data from the device to the server.
Holy mackerel, was it full of additional spyware. I was already a little uneasy sending driving data to a private company, but this would potentially be sending constant phone tracking. No thanks!

You might also want to have a look at Lawnchair, which is designed to be a more “stock” experience, but with some additional customizations.
gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Android@lemmy.world•Nova Launcher's Sad End: Founder Says Development Is OverEnglish3·2 days agoI’ve been using Kvaesisto as my daily, which is a nice hybrid of the drawer-style launchers and search-based launchers. It’s coded from the ground up, has an impressive number of integrations, themed widgets that slide out of sight, etc.
KISS launcher is the original and still the best of the search based launchers. Okay, I have no idea if it is really the original, but it’s been around for over a decade now, and still has an active development community. It’s been forked hundreds of times into similar projects which add some additional features, but if you want a minimal launcher that gets out of your way, then this is what you’re looking for.
A similar, minimal style launcher is OLauncher, which has also been around for a few years and has been forked like crazy.
One of the best traditional drawer-style launchers is Lawnchair, which has sprung back to life after a hiatus from updating. It’s built on the Android launcher, with lots of additional customizations.
I don’t know of any current project that approaches the maximal customization philosophy of Nova Launcher. It was really one of a kind. All of the above are FOSS, but even in the closed software space, I don’t think there is anything like Nova.

gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Showerthoughts@lemmy.world•Religious texts contributed to the em-dashes that chatbots use.34·2 days agoWell, maybe a little. Em dashes and en dashes are pretty standard (and editorially enforced) in newspapers and academic journals. By length, every religious text is eclipsed by news and journal media on a daily basis.

gedaliyah@lemmy.worldto Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•How to find offline alternatives to software-as-a-service and apps with unnecessary internet connections?3·3 days agoThe !selfhosted@lemmy.world community has a lot of information on how to do this. I got into it a couple years ago because I felt weird about google listening in on my lightswitch activity (and to steal TV). Now I have a nice set of services running that have nothing to do with media (and actually help me do more things legally, and in some cases better than before).
There are also software communities like !grapheneos@lemmy.world to help with tools to manage software better. I am not a fanboy or anything but I like that GrapheneOS allows any app to be installed without network permissions.
