  • I’m gonna go against the grain here and say no, especially in IT. I’m a hiring manager and I can’t tell you the number of people that are loaded with certs and only understand rote memorization and not actually practical application of topics. I prefer to see the experience and my interview questions actually get into real examples to see your thought process, instead of spitting out a list of facts.

    Now, if you don’t have the experience, that can potentially offset things some, but I’ve always found experience and application are key for any of my hires.






  • “Added to your work network”. Tell me you work at a mom and pop shop.

    I work somewhere where my car is easily 2-300 yards away through multiple building and support structures in a garage. Adhoc WiFi isn’t reaching that far.

    And for anyone in an apartment, there’s a good possibility they’re not near their car either. Or when they’re out shopping, or after a movie, etc.

    There’s a multitude of places where BT or WiFi just doesn’t have the range, and you want to start your car early enough to warm it up or cool it down in more than the 20 steps line-of-sight that a fob, or one of those technologies can do it in. But ultimately it’s all a #firstworldproblem that we’ve created anyway.




  • Okay, so then who or how are you supposed to pay for the infrastructure for the remote start command to reach the car? The “free” option was using a Mazda developed API, on Mazda owned servers, with a cellular connection (again 3rd party has to pay for the infrastructure) to reach your car.

    Yes it was an asshole move to remove the remote start from the key fob, but charging for the remote app is not an incredulous action since you have to pay for that infrastructure.

    You can choose not to pay it, not use the anpp features and your car still perfectly functions as a car. If you think all that infrastructure should be included free, all that will cause is an across the board price hike for everyone’s car as they bake that maintenance cost into the price of the car, even if you don’t use the app.





  • There’s nuance to this article. The cost is for the connected services portion, which usually includes the fee for the cellular connectivity the car has to enable the services, that’s not free and there is a cost to maintain that infrastructure. Additionally the “workaround” that someone provided still uses those connected services (again, not something that is just free to maintain).

    The shitty part that comes in is that Mazda removed the key fob remote start option from their newer vehicles. That being said though, nothing in the above statements is centered around “right to repair”. If you don’t want to pay for the connected services, then don’t, everything else in your car will still work.

    About the only way you could argue for it is a “bring your own SIM” approach but even then, where would it connect to? Who would pay to maintain that? You’d have to allow it to connect to a custom endpoint, but at that point guess what: you’re paying for the cellular connectivity and the server to host an API on to do what you want. That’s still an additional cost beyond what you paid for the car just like the connected services fee.




  • How are you shifting? I had the hardest time with how I was “taught” manual until I had another friend correct me. You should be making a smooth transition between the clutch and the accelerator, so think 100/0…75/25…50/50…25/75…0/100. I was originally thinking that i had to be completely off the clutch before applying the accelerator and have to do it with pinpoint accuracy like you said and it was rough every time. After talking to my friend who had been driving manual for years and still does, I got a lot better.
