I just saw an opinion piece by Chris Kenny in the Australian whinging that the “majority” of the media isn’t giving Dutton a free ride on nuclear. Bro you are the majority of the media. ABC and the Guardian have much smaller audiences

I can’t remember where but they mention in the report that SMRs were the most suitable form of reactor for Australia according to some industry consultation and it being difficult to realise the full costings of the large scale “traditional” nuclear reactors due to government subsidies, lack of transparency and different labour costs in Australia VS somewhere else 50 years ago.

Do you think the Coalition (or any hypothetical but still possible Australian Government) could actually deliver nuclear by 2040? Given the lack of expertise and experience, as well as pushback from States and lack of private investment I think it’s really unlikely

Acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines under AUKUS: Nearly half of Australians (48 percent) agreed that ‘The Australian government’s plan to acquire nuclear submarines under the Australia–UK–US (AUKUS) trilateral security partnership will help keep Australia secure from a military threat from China’, a four-point increase from when the view was first measured in 2023 (44 percent).

Victoria residents (71 percent) were significantly more likely to agree, while Australian Capital Territory residents (29 percent) were significantly less likely to agree.

so the subs aren’t terribly popular.

The possibility of military conflict with China within three years: Half of Australians (50 percent) said that ‘Military conflict with China within three years is a serious possibility’, a continuation of views expressed in 2023 (51 percent). Twenty-three percent disagreed and 27 percent expressed neutrality.

And the media/LNP narrative about war with China is kind of working.

I’m sorry I did that, it was out of lack of experience and a knee-jerk reaction to reports from users who weren’t happy about posts all being lumped in the one community. I’m not proud of the mess that was early on, and I’ve switched the priorities to look after this community first, and allow the others to grow in their own right alongside this one. Whether we should consider some kind of promotional campaign

I’ve been having a think as to the best way to go about this and I think we should be promoting Aussie Zone instead of Lemmy, just because it’s easier for casual users to get their heads around:

• We’re an ad-free place to have good quality discussions about Australian life and politics, just like reddit, except it’s run for Australians and not for profit. We’re also connected to a worldwide network of similar forums where interesting discussions can take place about issues of a global scale with communities also dedicated to memes.

Especially this, with all of the drama Lemmy.world causes (and is still causing - just got a test comment I sent on there last week today). It would all come down to what is more cost effective and how the parallel federation stuff helps in 0.19.5. I think something that would make this possible is to add another view (Subscribed, Local, All, Moderator View), call it “Curated” to have posts show up from the local feed of another instance or add communities to it (all under control of the Admins). That way if we had another instance we could encourage people to sign up there for load balancing, we could also run sister instances with different default settings (i.e. disabled downvotes or open community creation or open registration). A year ago it looked like the mods of some of the Australia related subreddits wanted to migrate their communities here. Interestingly they haven’t stuck around, perhaps due to not getting power?

Something which is increasingly common now are the Australia Post scams - remember: Australia Post don’t know your phone number so they can’t tell you if something is wrong. They’ve also done a recent advertising campaign stating that they now only send notifications through their official app so you can trust that it is from them.

Guys if you have saved messages from myGov and someone spoofs the number there messages can end up in the same thread so please delete your my gov messages on your phone if possible.

We’re in the season of tax returns and now is a great time for scammers to strike. Here’s some things to keep an eye out for but it’s not exclusive.

• unless you have engaged an accountant, no one will contact you about your tax except myGov
• if myGov contact you, they won’t tell you to do anything except check your inbox (exception is security codes but you will have initiated the reason for this)
• if myGov contact you, DO NOT CLICK ANY LINKS. They don’t send them.
• if you get a message from mygov and it shows a phone number, it’s a scam. MyGov messages will only say they are from myGov. This isn’t a guarantee that it’s legit, but the lack of it means scam.

Please add more tips below to ensure people don’t get caught out.
