That’s rough, suicide always felt selfish to me because of this. The only times I’ve truly felt blackmailed in my personal life is when I cared for people who acted like they might off themselves.
I’ve always wondered why some people commit suicide by setting themselves on fire, for example. Objectively it’s just about the worst thing you could do, it’s slow and excruciatingly painful. Yet people still do it, almost to add their suffering as a burden to the conscience of those who are left alive in their wake.
I even have a name for that, “holding yourself hostage” – making threats if they don’t get what they want. Thankfully most of the people who make threats like that would never follow through, but you never really know.
Yeah, it’s very hard when you care about someone who does that to you, as you don’t have a magical way of not caring about them anymore.
I generally cut off anyone who does this to me. I refuse to care and I am not responsible for someone in that state. The desire to help them still eats at me though.
