Am I the only one who just thinks all these people are wierdo control freaks? Like, “oh no we could potentially contact someone! Man the harpoons! Dam the torpedoes! Batton the hatches!”

Lol no you are definitely not. I get irritated seeing posts like these because of how tyrannical and censorship happy they are.

I see it talked about alot

And it’s retarded as shit. There is no focus on tools or development to enhance user experience or the platform.

It’s always some fuckin ‘Control user, ban user, see users private messages and edit them, give false error code to ban user, block instance but still have access to their userbase’ fuckin bullshit.

That’s incredibly psychotic to me. These people are literally fucking batshit crazy

It’s interesting, there’s 2 times you can learn about who someone really is: Make things hard and take away their power, or make things easy and give them power.

You never know, people who are really good in one circumstance are really bad in the other or vice versa. You see it though, people who were decent when they were poor or even when things were normal; give them an ounce of power over others and suddenly they become tyrants. It’s an easy thing to fall into, especially when you have never been trained in the exercise of power and you think that once you have power you have a duty to use it early and often.

Power corrupts, even petty power can do that to the weak.

For sure. It isn’t a virtue to be powerless to help or harm people and choose to do neither. Virtue is in having the choice and making the right one.

I think that often gets lost on people, as you say, being powerless isn’t a virtue, and lots of people go off the rails the moment they get even a hint of power

If you spent the past few years relying on peer pressure to enforce social norms, then the influx of people who do not share your values is going to make that tactic moot.

In fact, we can already see the pushback to the scolding tactics unfolding right now.

You, as a Feeler server, interact with them for a bit and nothing suspicious happens, and their users seem all to be ideologically aligned enough. You then add them into a public “endorsed list”. Now all the servers in your trust circle who are in allow-mode see this endorsement and automatically add them to their allow-lists. Bam! Problem solved.

Federation is cool, as long as those who federate think as we do.
