“To increase defense, security and economic cooperation,” WTF?!?! The Orange Shit Stain is threatening a trade war with the EU, which includes Denmark, and he wants to bust up NATO. Liar.

Why is Trump so fixated on Greenland? Nuuk has less than 20,000 residents and the island is only really known for its fishing industry.

Also I’m sure Denmark are part of NATO already so there’s already no additional military importance from buying the land.

There is potentially an immense amount of rare earth minerals buried under one of the largest supplies of freshwater. And it’s close to the arctic which would make it convenient location for refineries with arctic oil and gas.

Resources and climate refuge can’t be the major reason. Too long term payoffs.

Military bases threatening Europe or the us depending on control, is only a big deal when considering policies that raise anger.

You’re giving too much credit if you think he thought of it. Others want him to get it for them. He’s old and unhealthy, but a useful stooge in the interim.

It’s a very large secluded island that’s about to get livable and he’s a real estate guy, a bad one but still. He’s not playing chess, he’s trying to buy land to setup billionaire playlands with zero poors. Don’t really want to live in the country filled with poors you just fucked up, that would be insane.

It can’t be true. There’s no way he said that. It has to be a fake message.

The US annexing Greenland is all it would take? How so? I’m asking because I’m woefully undereducated in these matters. Couldn’t we form our own NATO, without the US but with blackjack and universal health care?

Greenland belongs to Denmark. Denmark doesn’t want to give it up. So annexing it would constitute an attack of one NATO member on another.

A lot of those until the combined effort of Europe, the US and Russia stopped him.

I don’t know, but when the coming leader of the nation with the largest military in the world and the second most nukes is throwing wild conquest fantasies around, some about allies, I can’t help but get a little bit nervous.

How much do native Greenlanders like being governed by Denmark, would they conceivably be better off as US citizens? Obviously self governance is best but could they defend their own territory in that case. I think there’s a case to be made for this idea and few Americans regret having Alaska as part of the union.

It’s already a self governing territory. And Americans will treat the Natives probably even worse than the Danish do nowadays

Lets see here… giving up social nets and universal healthcare, adopting policies that are destroying their home, very likely never be granted statehood, thus have little say in federal politics…

Im going to go with a strong no. They arent better off as US citizens.

Last time this idea was brought up, the Danish response was clear: Denmark can’t sell Greenland because it’s not ours to sell. The Greenlanders rejected the offer.

There’s been decades of collaboration between Denmark and Greenland on establishing autonomy and independence of Greenland. It appears they are not interested in becoming integrated into a different state, but would rather continue that process.

But indeed, it’s up to the people of Greenland.
