Counterpoint: there are plenty of well off folks taking classified drugs recreationally out of boredom that become addicted. I came from a high cost of living suburbia and there really wasn’t a lot to do as a teenager due to high property values and taxes. Refractional spaces, especially aimed at teens, were basically non-existent. I imagine the same is also true in rural areas, but for different reasons.

A very related question to ask is: did your parents, or extended family, ever help you financially?

Here’s my answer.

Have I ever received help from my parents and/or extended family? Yes. I was able to live rent free after high school while I found my way. When I eventually started college I was able to live at home and commute. My family started a college fund for me when I was little, so I was able to cover about 15% of my in-state tuition. We also got a cash loan from my Grandma to put toward a down payment that we paid back over the course of a few years. Without it we wouldn’t have been able to buy our house.

Am I getting help from my parents or extended family now? No, I haven’t for years. Money and support have started flowing the other direction. I’ve given my mom a (used) car and also let her live with us for a year and a half while she switched careers.

To be a good succulent parent you do need to tend toward the neglect side of things.

Potted plants in general tend to get over watered thanks to too much love and attention from their owners. Roots need the opportunity to dry out and pots do a good job of resisting that.

Many first time growers who experience dead/dying plants think it’s because they’re not doing enough, when the inverse is often the case: they’re doing too much.

Both.

Here because communities need nurturing to thrive. Some have really started to do well, others will get there eventually if people engage (post, comment).

There because there are a lot of established communities, especially niche ones, across tons of platforms that are still worth engaging with.

Subscribed to the second and link. I like to lurk/sort by subscribed and new and will try to comment when I have something to contribute. Niche communities are hard to form without a decent user base, but a general recommends community seems like a great idea.

I was generalizing about heirlooms not being very easy to grow to modern standards. I grow a decent verity of heirlooms and hybrids and the hybrids don’t split nearly as often.

And if you don’t grow tomatoes yourself you’ll never know the difference.

What do you mean? Once you have home grown, or even farm stand, produce you realize that the vast majority of grocery store stuff is picked before it’s really ripe.

I suspect this is like our tomatoes. The tomatos you buy in stores were cultivated to be pretty, to get harvested by a machine, and to ship without getting damaged. Meanwhile, heirloom tomatoes will split their skin on a humid day, but they pack a ton more flavor in. The same is true for the vast majority of our fruit and veg. Actually ripened on plant produce doesn’t have a very long shelf life.

Week? Man. I have a large Jade and water the thing evey other month. Sometimes it goes even longer than that. It’s happily starting it’s spring bloom after coming out from under grow lights in my basement to sit in front of a north facing window. All our smaller succulents are on a monthly ish schedule, but that’s not anything we rigorously watch/pay attention to. Weekly for a succulent seems too often, but if they’re happy they’re happy.

This isn’t about imperial vs metric, it’s about measuring by mass vs volume. A good example here is flour. Weighing out 30 grams (or about 1 ounce) of flour will always result in the same amount. On the other hand, you can densely pack flour into a 1/4 cup measuring cup, you can gingerly spoon it in little by little, or you can scoop and level. When you do this you’ll get three different amounts of flour, even though they all fill that 1/4 cup. Good luck consistently measuring from scoop to scoop even if you use the same method for each scoop.

I dug through your post history to see if I could unearth clues regarding your process. No dice, but I recognize the vast majority of your posts and have commented on a few of them over the past 6 months or so. I didn’t realize they all came from the same person, impressive!

I still have my original question (how did you go about forging this), but now I have another one: what do you do for a living? It’s obvious that you enjoy working across a variety of media and your level of competence suggests that you’ve been doing this type of thing for a while. I am a… very low output hobbiest maker. It’s nice to see what others are able to accomplish with more time input, but it’s never been clear to me just how large (or not) that time input was.

I hope I didn’t sound like I was implying that you should give your designs away for free :)

I understand what you’re saying - better to give the early design to a person who gardens as a primary interest than someone who 3D prints as a primary interest since the gardener will likely have insight into what works or doesn’t work for the act of gardening. There are some of us in both camps, but the overlap probably isn’t that big.

I’m assuming when you say 3D design, you using either CAD or modeling software? If yes, you could consider selling STLs as well as the finished product. Giving away, or heavily discounting, STLs for an alpha/beta run, would eliminate your shipping and material cost for testing. You would still be able to sell physical parts, as well as produce parts that are nicer than your average hobbyist will produce (for example, print molds and cast the planter in a more traditional material).
