Well yes, humpback whales reach sexual maturity by around 10 years of age (some much before then it seems). A marine biologist is still practically in it’s larval form at that point.

(Yes, yes, I know that wasn’t what you meant, but I couldn’t help myself)

  • There’s an easier and more reliable way to limit replication; don’t hive them the means to create a small but essential part, and instead load the first probe woth many copies of it and have each replica take a set percentage.

For instance, have the probe able to replicate everything but its CPU, and just load up a rack of them on probe 0. Every time it replicates itself it passes half of its remaining stock to the replica and they both carry on from there.

  • Check the linked article, the issue is around how information that is technically true but presented in certain ways can influence people. They found that headlines that, for instance, said someone had died after being vaccinated had a significant effect on people’s intention to get vaccinated themselves, despite complications being very rare.

Basically people are easy to influence, and you don’t need to outright lie to do it, just presenting facts in an unbalanced way will do it. Many would call that lieing too, but it’s by omission rather than by fabrication.

If you check other sources as well, it seems to, in fact, be 1000 times gravity. For example check The Audubon Society where it’s quoted as ‘1500 g-force’ units, compared to about 5 on a rollercoaster, this paper which seems to show it as even greater in figure 2 or The Zooilogical Society of London which cites 10000 m/s/s or around 1000 g.

Interestingly, as woodpecker brains apparently weight about 2.5 grams, the difference between 9.8N of force and 1000 g=0.0025*9.81*1000=24.525N isn’t all that great. From reading around it seems their skulls and tongues don’t even absorb much impact. as it’d make their digging less efficient, their brains are just light enough and structured so they don’t get damaged.

I’ve seen that image many times before, but not really stopped to think about the details.

    • ‘Tongue bones’ disturbs me. Doubly so when they seem to be shown curving around the inside of the skull. Are they actually bones, or more akin to tendons?

    • A woodpeckers tongue appears to be bifurcated at the back. I suppose that makes sense if it curves upwards rather than down the throat, but still; nature is weird.

    • 1000G is a lot of force. Even if the brain is padded by the tongue (it’s like they’re almost licking their own brains), the bulk of the brain is still getting bounced around. I wonder if we can learn anything about mitigating TBIs from them?

  • Thanks for the update. If you have the time and energy after the migration I’d be interested to hear details of the new setup, we have servers using vswitch too, and while I haven’t run into trouble myself I’d like to avoid it if possible. You know what they say about the wise learning from others’ experience!

You can look at multiplication as a shorthand for repeated addition, so, for example:

    3x3=0 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 9

In other words we have three lots of three. The zero will be handy later…

    Next consider:

    -3x3 = 0 + -3 + -3 + -3 = -9

Here we have three lots of minus three. So what happens if we instead have minus three lots of three? Instead of adding the threes, we subtract them:

    3x-3 = 0 - 3 - 3 - 3 = -9

Finally, what if we want minus three lots of minus three? Subtracting a negative number is the equivalent of adding the positive value:

    -3x-3 = 0 - -3 - -3 - -3 = 0 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 9

Do let me know if some of that isn’t clear.
