  • This is a really good question, and I suppose the answer is the same as to why Mastodon is not more popular.

I think it is a combination of several factors:

    1. Not many people know about it. Really, reddit is one of the most well known websites on the internet. Very few people know lemmy/mastodon.
    2. UI/UX issues. The more friction there is, the smaller the probability of someone using something. And Lemmy has TONS of friction. And the lemmy devs are not welcome to suggestions. Seriously, every suggestion that is made is probably answered with “I am against this”. If the idea did not come from their heads, they are probably against it. This has been my experience with them, at least.
    3. Lack of content. On reddit, there is tons of content. On lemmy, not so much. And people are generally not very principled. They want to consume, and completely ignore the ethics/morality of whatever it is they are doing.

I think this is not necessarily bad though. Lemmy DOES need more content and more users. But I hope it never becomes the size of reddit. Because reddit fucking sucks. People are stupid as fuck there now. The amount of low effort and low information content on reddit is astonishing.

Hopefully, Lemmy gets the smart, principled, interesting people and reddit keeps the influencers and onlyfaners.

  • I am still at a loss of words over the fact that the US has a rapist pedophile as president and a good portion of the population is ok with that. A rapist pedophile that is doing the opposite of Robin Hood, stealing from the poor and giving it to his millionaires/billionaires “friends”.

I just don’t see how society can improve if humans are so fucking stupid and evil. This whole thing literally removed my faith in humanity. I was always a bit of a misanthrope but after this whole Trump and MAGA and Russia thing, my misanthropy is at an all time high.

  • This is great news. However, I am still dumbfounded on how 42% voted for the other guy. He is literally a sexual assaulter and he was endorsed by Trump and Elon Musk! How is it that so many people still voted for him?

Mamdani could not have had a better campaign, yet, he had just ~8% more votes. If the other guy ran a just tiny bit better campain, things could have been very different.

I am trully happy that Mamdani won, but yet, I am left scared at the state of things. He should have had 70/80% of votes. After all that has been happening in the US for the last 9 months or so, there is only a 8% number of votes separating the two sides? Holly molly, that is scary.

  • It seems to be device specific. On my device, WhatsApp fits 2 more chats. I hate meta/insta/fb/etc, but WhatsApp just looks considerably better than Signal. Signal, as I said earlier, just has huge margins and padding. It looks ugly.

Like you, I also want my messenger app to show conversations. Sadly, Signal shows more empty space than conversations. It really needs a compact UI. I invited several friends to Signal and they all left because it looks bad. I know it sounds like nitpicking, but UI/UX IS extremely important. Making the claim “meh, it looks fine” and ignoring people’s perspective is not the way to run an app that is dependent on the number of users, like signal is. If I don’t have anyone with whom to chat, the app is useless. It needs userbase.

  • WhatsApp getting ads is great news! WhatsApp, and any other meta/facebook/for-profit-social-network will never be a good product. Therefore, the second best alternative is for it to be as bad as possible, so people finally change to worthy alternatives.

What is the alternative here? Don’t know, perhaps Signal, though the devs are not welcoming at all. The UI is absolute shit. Looks like UI for old people, huge margins and empty space. My screen fits like 3 chats. A compact theme would take a few hours to create and vastly improve the product, but ya…
