Shoko Miyata, the captain of Japan’s women’s gymnastics team, has withdrawn from Paris 2024 after allegedly breaking the team’s code of conduct by smoking and drinking alcohol, according to the Japanese Gymnastics Association (JGA).
She’s going to give up years or even decades worth of sacrifices for doing something that hurts her performance? Alcohol and cigarettes are legal, and even if she’s underage, that’s an issue for her parents. Kids make poor judgement calls all the time. Her decision here is completely unrelated to her status as an Olympian and certainly doesn’t give her an unfair advantage.
These are not olympic rules, they are rules of the Japanese Olympic Committee. Olympians from many nations, including western nations have been dropped by their NOCs for having poor character. I bet you would agree with many of the decisions if they offended your sensibilities.
This is a good point… What if she did a stream - DRUNK, because it’s OK to drink now, right? - and she was like
“God I hate these foreigners in Japan and what’s up with all these disgusting LGBTQ people these days…?!”
She’d be dropped, right.
I guess we can say that it is bad for them to be so strict as to just not discipline her for her smoking/drinking in a far more mellow way, but yeah, IDK.
It might be the case that she was not considered a truly elite tier competitor and that she was previously caught as well.
Is the TOS on lemmy.world stupid?
She knew the rules, why shouldn’t she be punished?

Pick one.
