The cheapest and easiest is to get a raspberry pi (or similar), slap an external USB drive to it to act as the storage medium, set up Syncthing between it and your computer and give it to a family member with fast internet.

It’s fast and secure, and outside of the initial hardware cost it’s incredibly cheap to run too since Pi’s sip power. It probably goes without saying that you should always use full disk encryption on both your main machine and the Pi, so if someone ever physically steals any of them, they’re not getting your data.

I have a nextcloud server on a separate computer. It’s easier to menage than Syncthing. It’s really useful along with all the other stuff I host.

I went the opposite way, had Nextcloud but I only really needed it for back-ups and it’s slow as shit and would time out transferring huge files (100+GB) no matter how many optimizations I tried.

Syncthing on the other hand will fire everything through at line rate, no problem. So I use Syncthing for everything now, even on my phone

Up until now I have not seen encountered any issues with the web client. Their mobile app is absolutely shit.

It’s also really useful for sharing files. From time to time I photograph my friends and sending the final result after esiting is extreamly easy

I have to say, sharing files or having your files “with you” was one of the really nice parts about it.
