I know all of us would be happy to have more people to interact with on content. The idea of limited federation came up a bit recently too, and I mentioned that we are open to it.

The reasons we haven’t been federated have nothing to do with not wanting to open up to the rest of the Fediverse, and everything to do with the drama that comes with federation. Specifically, we don’t want the dodgy porn that other instances get bombed with, the endless political fanatics who poison every topic, the admins who want to impose their views on you, the constant screeching and demonizing, etc. The overwhelming majority of all Fediverse content is hot garbage, and having to store that bloat for nothing is also a huge turn-off.

On the other hand, I think we can all agree that it would be nice to have more people to talk shit with, and federation is an easy(er) way to achieve that. Our current thinking is that we’d like to selectively federate with instances who tick off a few requirements:

  1. No porn or loli shit or pedo apologists or anything like that
  2. They require registration applications (this one’s about spam)
  3. Their admins aren’t missing in action (also about spam)
  4. Their rules don’t sound like something Stalin would’ve come up with

The requirements above are just a way of me saying I don’t have time to deal with this shit if it became high drama and high maintenance, so I’d like to avoid that if possible. I really don’t care about political lean or anything like that.

Alice compiled an initial list:

What are your thoughts?

Yeah, you should do it. Totally.

With Wiggle gone, the place has slowed down dramatically.

I have contemplated leaving permanently - with great sorrow, of course, but I just sense a certain futility and purposelessness. It needs some new life.

I love you guys but like… What am I doing, really. That’s hwo I feel.

Fair. You post a lot and it’s appreciated and definitely seen. You add a lot here so thank you for that.

I know doing this will help and see more activities and interaction. We’re finally on the join lemmy page and I feel that helps with exposure.

What new life are you hoping to see ? I’m curious to how people from instances will be with us. Not thinking bad stuff.

It’ll just be interesting because we’re the opposite of how most instances are

I’d like to see more memes and more people bringing in discussions… Ideally it’d just be hundreds of people commenting daily and I would often need to browse here first to see if what I’m posting has already been up

And just have this feeling like if I stop posting for a few weeks it’ll go unnoticed.

That’s the end goal I guess

Hopefully we’ll get there, I think this is just the natural state of having a few hundred active people, but getting there is hard.

Hopefully federation will generate more engagement on stuff you do post at least in the meantime.

      Added those

Yeah I think it’s probably a good thing to have at least one of the larger instances added, and lemm.ee seems like the more sane out of the lot.

I’d love to be federated at fbxl lotide. I disabled new signups because it kept spamming, so pretty limited.

Protect yourself from the redditors though. Be tight with federation since we know it can be hostile

I agree with limited federation. The fediverse was made for federation and not just separated communities.

To the list it wouldn’t be bad to add hack liberty’s instance.

Yeah… I tried to update it but as every other version the ansible script doesn’t update it fully and you have to do some preparations beforehand. I don’t really know if it’s fixable. I might have to reinstall again :-(

Oh you went the ansible route, I think I tried it in the past but could never get the stupid thing to work properly.

I’ve got it running “from scratch” so to speak.

Nahh it’s too much work. It says that the guide is made only if you don’t have access to Docker and I do. I will update it manualy. Without the script

Can we see the actual current whitelist of our instances? There is this url: https://hilariouschaos.com/instances

But I think it shows all the instances linked EVER? At least it looks like that when I lookit up on my instance. I wonder if there is a publicly avaiable whitelist for every instance

Yes, it’s on that page, “allowed instances”:

For us it’s the same list since we’ve only ever done a whitelist, so only allowed instances have ever linked, so to speak. Most instances operate a blacklist, that is to say they federate with everyone but just block certain instances.

I’m down for federation, Join, or Die as they say. Will there be a policy regarding defederation? It would suck to start participating in another instance and get cut off.

      Nice, we’ve jumped in.

I should probably jolt one down. In a nutshell, we won’t de-federate unless they’re consistently the reason why we keep ending up with scat porn on the front page (or similar)
