I cannot relate to this as I never followed Jack Black much. I am curious as to what people’s opinons are - don’t downvote this if you think it’s my opinion, lol, because it isn’t, but I thought it was spicy and I could see some interesting Fediverse feedback.
I like JB’s vibe generally. I have lost a lot of my old mischievous goofball self, so I’m not going to get down on him for something I see in myself. I took my kid to a School of Rock musical and we loved it.
But… There are signs he’s out of touch. He broke up with Kyle Gass over what was the internet’s most common opinion last July. So, maybe he’s got some growing to do. I hope he can do that without losing his sense of humour. It can be hard to do.
Meh. He didn’t want to be in stage with those discussions pointing at him. I get it, even if the opinion was indeed popular.
I dunno, i can relate. I find his performances in things now to be very insufferable. He clearly just checks some marketability boxes and has flanderized himself to be safe enough to keep collecting those Claptrap and Minecraft-Steve paychecks.
It feels foolish because any idol will dissapoint you, and JB never seemed like a figure you should invest much emotion in. But you listen to old Tenacious D songs and part of “the act” is that JB and KG are friends on a level those goes beyond any other notion of fraternity and friendship. The songs are about the earth-shaking power of their bond.
So to see JB casually throw that away over a stupid joke, it reveals the artifice of the whole enterprise. And that sucks, its like when the couple you’ve known for 15 years, married since high school, get divorced and then you find out that actually he was abusive and the whole perfect loving relationship was a front. It tears up an example of a good relationship you didn’t realize was your model and makes you question if you really understood to begin with.
Which movie was it that made you go from “Hey, it’s a movie with Jack Black!” To “Ugh, it’s a movie with Jack Black…”
Most people will say Jumanji but Gulliver Travels and Goosebumps foreshadowed it long before.
Jack Black, Ryan Reynolds, Kevin Hart, and Dwayne Johnson all sort of inhabit that zone for me. They’re the same character in anything they do.
This is exactly why I can’t stand celebrity simp culture. It’s crazy how obsessed people are and borderline treat them like they are a personal friend of theirs.
Parasocial relationships are fucking bizarre.
Jack Black is a national treasure. He’s full of heart and comedy and true musical talent. Yes, Tenacious D alone earns you far enough cred to do some stinker movies and still be cool. These movies may suck but he’s just enjoying life and saying yes to the funnest jobs in the world. I don’t blame him. I get how younger people might just know him as the goofy actor from Jumanji and all these other churn-out movies he’s done lately and not get the hype, but for 90s kids he will always be on a pedestal.
Are there many millennials out there that are both still working minimum wage food service jobs and are also old enough to remember Tenacious D and also have children?
Yes. People of all ages work minimum wage jobs.
I can’t afford to have children.
My favorite Jack Black role is in the Jackal, with Bruce Willis, if that tells you anything.
Couldn’t have spoken the truth about Jack black better myself.
