Bring back transparent shells, I want to see that sexy technology god damn it!
Check out the company Nothing. They make products like the Nothing Phone with transparent designs
Fairphone 5 also has a translucent back option.
Are you preparing for a zombie apocalypse?
Anyway, this is the coolest shit I have ever seen today, and maybe the best one here on Lemmy!
If I was I’d be playing the theme song from 28 Days Later in the picture ☺️. Thank you!
Shoulda used clear purple for that real nostalga hit.
But awesome work
Do you have a guide or a part list or anything? I still have my iPod I bought new in 2006 but it hasn’t seen use in many years for a slew of issues, the main one being the headphone jack itself failing, but I’d love to refresh it like this.
Ditto. My 5.5g ipod video looks like he’ll, but I’d like to bring it back to life.
Look at then_three_more’s post in this thread
Dude thats so cool! Thanks for sharing!
Cool.
Love personal playlists. I use an old phone with SD card to use Bluetooth into my home theater system.
That’s dope!
damn!
if you don’t mind me asking:
how did you create the transparent casing? It looks really great and I’m not sure if it was 3D printed or some other wayDoes it still count as “imadeit” if I made it using a hodge podge of other people’s parts? Haha, I ordered the custom shell from eBay ☺️ but it feels very high quality (not 3D printed)
As a 3d printer enthusiast, I object to you implying that 3d printed parts aren’t high quality, while acknowledging that you’re very correct.
agreed, sometimes it makes sense to accept that trying to do everything isn’t worth it
What’s that little black thing that kinda looks like a tiny antenna in the top right corner, right next to the battery indicator/percentage?
Let me tell you son. Back in the day, headphones used to have a wire
I thought it was copper. 🤔
I thought it was an bt transmitter before I saw the cable in the bottom of the shot. A lot smaller then the fm transmitter I have.
I know the angle is a bit weird, but that is a wired headphone/earbud cable. The cable just has a 90 degree bend at the end.
💀
Always cool to see ‘retro’ tech brought back, especially with major overhauls. Kinda wish Apple still did dedicated ‘dumb’ MP3 players, if I’m being honest.
I’ve seen a few open hardware projects for “dumb” MP3 players over the years. I found this article on the Tangara project and am tempted to build one.
Edit: Scrolled down and saw someone already posted this.
Bet you could manage with a microcontroller and some parts. Use a bare chip, solder it all fancy (might take a few tries, use something cheap, order in bulk, attach the big expensive drive last), print the case, etc. Bet there’s even a guide out there somewhere.
Yeah it’s nice to have the built in OS support though
Yeah that’d be nice, but, lost technology; no longer exists.
Build it yourself or get nothing.
I would like to buy an ipod and mod it but it would cost too much.
Does it play FLAC?
or Opus
Just Doom and Crysis.
With rockbox installed, yes. With stock, ALAC.
One day I will upgrade my Zune 2nd gen into a modern device, like this. I can only hope the software keeps working for syncing, at least until someone writes a custom OS for it.
Jesus, I almost cried when I saw this
How did you get an SSD on it? 30 day battery is really impressive
