Damn. I worked for Google for almost 10 years and I had no idea.

When everything is a cache, nothing is a cache.
Holy shit. IPAs make so much more sense now!
Cars are just rebranded horseless carriages.
This just reminds me I’m mildly irritated that robots in fiction have glowing eyes so often. Light is supposed to go into eyes, not come out of them!
Any more so than, say, fingerprints, DNA, or accounting records?
How else are you supposed to pay for it?
I’ve been using Kagi for a few months and I’m liking it so far.
I bought a plug-in hybrid last week. I’d have gotten a pure EV, but I take road trips sometimes, and I don’t want to rely on the patchy changing network in the US.
Another factor is that I rent a house, and there’s already one EV to charge at 120V. The wiring can’t really handle a second charger, and I didn’t want to always be fighting over it.
Seems like any aliens advanced enough to study us would very easily figure out that hand gestures are a form of communication.
If they were really the same thing, traveling into the past would be trivial. Greg Egan’s Orthogonal series explores the consequences of space and time actually being the same thing. You can also the the difference in formulas related to proper time, where terms for space and time have opposite signs. Space and time have the same relationship to each other as real and imaginary numbers, in a fairly literal sense.
If you’re judging comments based mainly on how long they are, you should be grading high school essays about Jane Eyre, not trying to participate in an adult conversation.
Hollywood must really suck at business if they can’t keep their essential workers from going on strike every decade or two and taking down a bunch of good shows when they do. Seems like it would be a lot cheaper to just, you know, pay them.
Part of what makes an eclipse cool is that the sun is still overhead and too bright to look at, but everything else is almost as dark as at night.
RTS = rock taper scissors
FPS = frock paper scissors
I’ve never seen a calculator that had bracket keys but didn’t implement the conventional order of operations.
But anyway, I’m on Team RPN.
Yonatan Zunger, the lead engineer on Google+, once wrote a post about the research Google did to decide that downvotes don’t foster healthy discussions. Sadly his post has been lost to time, but I found it pretty convincing. It’s also refreshing not to feel the need to find and downvote every comment in a heated thread that’s, racist, fascist, transphobic, etc.
The problem I’m seeing with lemmy.world is that 95% of the posts and comments show as having a vote total of 0. Is it possible the federation protocol transmits votes separately from posts, and those messages are backlogged? I’m not up for reviewing the protocol right now but it’s the only plausible explanation I can think of. It also seems horribly inefficient if new posts and comments need a separate update even for the one upvote everything gets by default.
What pitch fork? Do you even know what the word privilege means?
Obviously God did it. /s
