GAB disabling media uploads for free tier from next month. Already a small exodus to fedi. Will be interesting to see if this starts a death cycle.
I think it will still thrive but it is a competitive disadvantage… probably should have somehow monetized user data uploads, maybe as an opt-in kind of thing. interesting development
Lower upload limits for free users is one good idea.
yeah but they probably figured people would make multiple accounts? idk what the reasoning was. I can see this being a problem with a mid-sized operation. big players can somehow fund many users. small groups would be strained
Running a social media isn’t really profitable. Unless you are advertising a lot, selling people’s data or profitably sell subscription there isn’t much money to be made.
Even Youtube isn’t profitable for Google. Can you imagine how smaller players like Gab are living. Last time I checked they had a monthly cost bar that rarely, if ever, fills up.
It probably can be profitable, but you need to run it like a business.
It sounds like most companies are burning cash like the joker, which makes sense since many companies are so growth oriented because they’re flush with VC cash and want to become unicorn IPOs. If you just kept it humble I bet you could have a small but profitable company. (I wonder if minds is profitable?)
I agree
Seems like they’re shooting themselves in the foot with this one. I’ve considered Gab pro before but it’s just too expensive.
It’s an understandable problem.
It sort of shows the natural quagmire that any platform finds itself in if it violates the sort of policies that will get them banned from the Google store and have their access to regular financial transactions pulled.
I’m sad for them.
It’s not a good sign at all. I think they will go under. I do not celebrate that.
they will go under
possibly, because I saw a few of them posting that this cracks down on “freeloaders”… however, “free” posters often “freely” contribute time generating content that the platform “freeloads” off of; in other words, it goes both ways and this penalizes volunteers similar to the Reddit API debacle over the summer last year.
If they’re smart and this doesn’t work out, they should pivot to one of the many approaches people are suggesting as an alternative way to handle this situation.
Right, like I would suggest limiting the quality of images that can be shared and only allowing image posts like twice a week… and perhaps flagging certain accounts with certain levels of engagement as meriting higher quality uploads and such.
What happened ?
“might be”
ehhh, sounds like it’s going down as they double down instead of trying something else out:
https://news.gab.com/2024/02/the-era-of-free-lunch-on-the-internet-is-over/
Doubled down on the lifetime patriot gab pro option too. $500 -> $999 overnight. Supposedly normal price is $7500 but I have no idea if that’s ever been charged (who on earth would pay it?).
he should have waited a month and then did this as a april fool’s joke… could have tested the waters to see how it goes over and still gotten away unscathed if it didn’t work out… bold moves instead
wonder What happened
Who knows. Just noticed my pinned post of this from 2022 got unpinned for some reason.
Oh man lol you’re funny 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 I’m not a huge fan of 100 PERCENT POLITICAL POSTS IN YOUR FACE NON STOP CIRCLE JERK THAT WE WON’T SHUT THE FUCK UP ABOUT.
Yawn. Boring. Don’t care.
