I think it’s just the overwhelming stupidity. The covid stuff I can kinda understand because it was a scary and uncertain time. And maybe, to a point, I had kind of just accepted that the antivax “movement” had gained a twisted sort of legitimacy in some people’s eyes purely because it has been around so long.

But this… this is just beyond dumb. Dollars to donuts these people have been drinking pasteurized milk their entire lives and never had an issue. Missing vitamins? Take a multivitamin and have more than your body knows what to do with. Want probiotics? Eat yogurt!

I also just read that Louisiana might approve milk for pet consumption and that’s just so god damn sad. It’s one thing to spew from both ends due to your own stupidity, but quite another to inflict that stupidity on creatures who have no choice but to rely on you for their health and comfort.

The flak you’re getting for this is bizarre. There are tons of women who wear a hijab by choice. It’s self expression, hell people even do pinups/porn in them so it’s not like the religious association is absolute or binding.

Women should not be forced to wear a hijab, but they also shouldn’t be forced not to. Feminism is about choice, the choice between embracing traditional roles and rules or eschewing them with equal acceptance.

I mean cats can be a lot harder to handle after you poke them. What if you need to give multiple vaccines? What if you need to draw blood? What if you need to touch other parts of their body to look for issues? What if you need to examine their mouth? Some cats will put up with it, some (a lot) will not. It’s a lot safer and less stressful for everyone if you just use a sedative when needed.

I mean, sometimes cats need care and the vet doesn’t really have time to gain their affection before poking them with a needle or prodding them all over. Not every cat is a fan of that, so sometimes you gotta deal with a cat who is trying very hard to claw your eyes out.

I allow it only as it pertains to plants, anyone using it for an event deserves prison.

I’m guilty of this, and for some reason “the dishes need doing” in particular tickles my brain. That one doesn’t even make sense with an infinitive!

I hate the confusion that “do you mind” questions cause.

“Do you mind if I turn off the light?”

What is meant in response: “No (I don’t mind)”

What’s said instead: “Yes”

I feel like two people never really know how the other will interpret it, so you almost always have to say something like “yes, go ahead” or “no, I don’t mind” (or “no, go ahead”). If they do respond just “yes” or “no”, I feel like I have to ask for clarification.

Also can we get the meaning of “semi-” and “bi-” figured out? I generally love the oddities of evolving language so long as we can all still be understood, but these two always require clarification.

Bi-annual: Every two years.
Semi-annual: Twice a year

I mean, to me it doesn’t really make that much sense one way or the other. Genuine question, how is “by” being used here? What are other examples of it being used this way?

1984 is honestly the most terrifying book I’ve read. I read to it see if people were invoking it in good faith (they weren’t) and left with a very real fear that there will always be a more pressing issue to distract us from any real political change, even in cases where most Americans agree with each other.

For a lot of people, elections (particularly national elections) don’t impact their day to day life. For some, though, the outcome of those national elections are very important. If you are, for example, trans, national elections around this time could alter the course of the trans civil rights movement. The president with their power to veto may be the only one capable of halting anti-trans bills if conservatives have a slim majority in the Senate and House. That’s why many trans people must concern themselves with politics and current events, must know what platforms candidates are running on and how the public is responding, must know what to expect and plan for the worst. Likewise with state and local elections, which may radically alter the life plans of a trans person. Thus, a trans person must know what’s happening now, what will happen next, and what they can expect for the future

The same applies to the right to abortion, or access to Healthcare for those dealing with long-term illness, or those attempting to unionize for better working conditions. When these things affect you directly, and when candidates are running on taking away the protections you need, you can’t afford to live in blissful ignorance.

So please, if you care about any of these groups, do spend a little time getting up to speed and drawing your own conclusions so you can vote in a way that you believe will improve the lives of your fellow citizens

Not really quite as bad as the others here, but I read the first two books of the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind as a young teen before getting squicked out by it. The female lead almost gets sexually assaulted four times (one of them being when she rides into the middle of a battlefield completely naked for incredibly contrived reasons). The entire first half of the second book is the author’s BDSM fantasy forced into plot relevancy. But perhaps the worst I read was some evil ritual that involved the villain cutting off and eating the genitals of a young boy.

So yeah, I stopped reading it.

Still as relevant today as it was 13 years (dear god) ago. Sure, not every pirate would pay for media, just like not every pirate pays for games, but charging increasingly more money for a worse product is going to push people towards a solution that basically allows you to search for and watch anything you want, ad-free.

There’s people practically begging to spend money for certain shows and movies to be available, but they’re just not available on any streaming service. What else are they going to do?

So… what are they gonna do if you don’t fuel enough? Is it just up to God to not let someone else fuck up their equipment after you’ve fueled up?

Love to hear it! Just to clarify, there’s the original webseries on YouTube and then Lazy in Space on Netflix. The latter is roughly a retelling of most of the webseries episodes but with more characters and a story that goes a bit past where the webseries ends. If you watch one, I’d do the Netflix one if possible, but both are good.
