[Migrated, see pinned post] Casual Conversation @lemm.ee•What hill will you die on?English
27·7 months agoIroning clothes is stupid and useless and shouldn’t be a thing. I haven’t ironed any of my clothes for decades now and they never look any different than the clothes that were ironed. It’s a scam! And humanity won’t be able to progress if we keep doing it!!

Progressive Politics@lemmy.world•[Video] Democrat leader Chuck Shumer: "Of course we say it's our land, the Torah says it. But they [Palestinians] don't believe in the Torah. So, that's the reason there is not peace."
10·8 months agoBut my book says it’s our land. So we should put our book and their book in a ring to fight it out. The winner takes the land. This is the only logical solution to this problem.

Technology@lemmy.world•Saudi Arabia Buys Pokémon Go, and Probably All of Your Location DataEnglish
38·8 months agoSaudi Arabia isn’t a person. I hate it when news titles aren’t specific enough. Is it the government that bought them? A private company? Just a dude that happens to be Saudi? The implications can change drastically based on who bought it.
Also the article link isn’t working for me so all i got is the title. And as most people that’d see it, they’d also only read the title, this type of simplification can lead to a lot of misinformation. Or worse, racism, as you combine a whole country and its people to one entity which is dehumanizing. I’m speaking from experience as a Saudi person who’s always grouped with the “saudi” or "Arabic " or “brown” groups instead of another human being.
In short, news should stop generalizing and be more specific, especially in the titles, the part that most people will interact with.

1·10 months agoTo build a bit on this, be patient with him! Even if he keeps saying not, it doesn’t matter, he’ll probably still appreciate it. Especially in the future. And it’ll show him that you’re interested in him, even if he doesn’t outwardly show it, it’s a huge boost coming from a parent.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What is a human behaviour you've never understood?
12·10 months agoImpersonal revenge. I understand the overwhelming emotions when it personally happens to you and needing that “payback”. Not that i support it, but i understand it and I’m pretty sure I’d feel the same at the moment if it happened to me. But when it’s people you don’t know, and you still seek “justice”? There’s no justice in increasing cruelty in the world. It only makes the world worse, not better. I think a lot of prejudices, like racism and such, evolve from this way of thinking, and our civilization would be a better place if we stop our revenge centered thinking. Hurting someone because they hurt you or others is weird to me. There are so many other ways to punish people without hurting them without a benefit other than “it makes me feel good to see them hurt because they’re bad people”.

Science Fiction@lemmy.world•What SF books did you enjoy the most in 2024?
3·10 months agoI read (listened to) some in the series Expeditionary Force by Craig Alanson. It’s a space opera, action/comedy. I love the whole series and I’ve listened to it multiple times already.
Others have already mentioned but I’ve also greatly enjoyed Bobiverse and would probably listen to it again this coming year.

2·11 months agoIt’s all based on the same mathematical model. And since it’s not profitable to make real progress in technology when you’re already making money from it, it’s all a very similar concept of the same technology. Capitalism sure is swell 🙃
