Reddit supports open dialog as long as they agree with it
my brother in christ, I was banned from all lemmy.ml communities (fairphone, signal, selfhosted etc etc) because I dared talk about the uyghur genocide.
Lemmy is even worse.
Lemmy.ml is one instance.
Join smaller instances so no one instance can dominate on many topics.
We should avoid creating monopolies.
It’s not just lemmy.ml… That’s the problem with any instance - that an idiot like me can just host one and be “the king”. Then a community grows, but the king still sits on the throne - whether he is qualified or not. Reddit had years to get rid of most of those issues with established modteams. Communities that had bad moderation faded away. Communities that “made it” had okayish mods since there were thousands of people to pressure a team acting like a-holes. Lemmy has barely any users compared to that, so a bad admin / moderator is more visible. Also, lemmy is heavily skewed towards echochambers, even more than reddit was.
Splitting communities just creates more issues - with having to crosspost to 2 or 3 groups of people who might not interact with one another. It’s honestly no wonder that there exists a “mega instance” in lemmy.world

!lotrmemes@lemmy.dbzer0.com is taking over !lotrmemes@midwest.social
It mostly took a post on !newcommunities@lemmy.world and a ping to the regular posters
Provided everyone sees it and moves there and not just stops seeing the content altogether and forgets about it. Remember, social media is like 95% lurkers. Also this assumes you are moving instances instead of there being two already that have different people watching them / moderating them.
Lemmy.ml has the monopoly on certain topics. Such as signal. The biggest alternatove is on kbin with 130 members (opposed to 1.4k on ml)
Signal is a non-political topic, just make another account to post there.
.ml admins (yeah, the lemmy devs themselves, sadly) and mods are tankies, of course they banned you for that.
Just join a sane, smaller instance; that’s the beauty of federation (and defederation of harmful instances like .ml or .world or hexbear).
The problem is that for some instances there’s no alternative to lemmy.ml
Signal for example has no federated alternative
But I am open to a moderated, defederated, sane inatance if you know any.

LemmyNSFW seems fine to me, if you’re OK with downvotes being disabled, and I’m pretty certain .ml defederated it because ooh, porn!; db0 also seems reasonable, and if I’m not mistaken both .ml and .world defederated it because ooh, piracy!.
And most of the smaller ones seem to be fine too.
Or just roll your own, that was always allowed.
if I’m not mistaken both .ml and .world defederated it because ooh, piracy!.
They did not. I can still see lemmy.world posts just fine. It is also still on lemmy.world’s linked instances, and lemmy.ml’s.
Ah, maybe they refederated them, then, or maybe I’m misremembering (though I’m pretty certain there was some drama about this a while back… maybe they just block specific communities…?)
contemplates the option of having an account on a porn-specific instance
Tempting Idea…
You missed the beauty though in what happened though. Lemmy isn’t worse, one instance was. So here you are still.
Except I’m back to spending most of my time on Reddit again because the communities I most care about just so happen to be home on lemmy.ml
Only on mobile I still use lemmy because of the API disaster
There’s a movement to move most lemmy.ml-specific communities off of that instance and onto other instances, I’d recommend looking around for alternative communities to the ones you used before. A lot of people are tired of ml’s shitty moderation policies and overcentralization.
Yeah, but it just isn’t there yet. Look at !signal@lemmy.ml
Iz’s a de-facto monopoly and there’s nothing we can do.
Not with that attitude. The more people move, the more likely people will use the newer community and it’s seen plenty of success.
Edit : it seems like we had the same conversation a week ago: https://lemmy.world/comment/14009221
I’m glad you’re speaking out against Uyghur genocide, but having an israel flag in your username is kinda sus considering what’s happening in Gaza.
Yeah, I scrolled the comments and kinda surpised almost no-one mentions it. Getting mixed vibes…
Understandable. Adding it was kind of a knee-jerk reaction after seeing someone unironically refer to hamas as “freedom fighters” and now it stays to show people not everyone shares their opinion on gaza. It can feel like An echo-chamber in here.
By no means do I think Netanyahus modus operandi is appropriate for this century, that’s not what I carry this flag for.
Umm nah please don’t do that.
Israel (as in the state, not the civillians living under them) is practially doing the same thing as what Hamas is doing, terrorism. Both are terrible groups. I don’t know which one is the worse one, but if someone claims one of them is “freedom fighters”, supporting their opposition isn’t helping whatever your argument might be.
I strongly disagree with you on that. Israel has a right to self defense. While the means might not be adequately / appropriately humane, saying they’re the same is like saying thw US are the same as the Nazis for bombing Dresden.
One is the aggressor, the other is not. We can gladly diacuss the means (again, fuck metanyahu and his seemingly complete disregard fpr human life) but that doesn’t change the fact tht one side wanted a war and the other was forced into it.
Plus the fact that wiping out Hamas will create an opportunity for lasting peace between Israel and Palestine (whether united or split into gaza and westjordanland) while not wiping it out will just make history repeat (or rhime) itself in a few years/decade(s)
Netanyahu should be sent to Den-Haag, but Hamas needs to be wiped out anyways.
isreal was very fair to the Palestinian population prior to hamas. a real out-of-left field move. no one could have seen et coming. not even a leader on the verge of being ousted.
Let me guess, you think the Treaty of Versailles allowed the Nazis to destroy Europe and gas people they didn’t like?
Because that’s a pretty similar Situation
Do you have any source on the Uyghur genocide? Because everything I’ve seen has been debunked.
Fuck off you fucking genocide-apologist
So I take it you have no source?
Such as?
What was the post?
Yeah, you can’t talk shit about ethnic cleansing with an Israeli flag in your username…
As I said back then:
Because I have an opinion on an Interstate conflict I’m nit allowed to oppose the genocide of uyghurs? Sounds like genocide-apologizing to me
Nevermind, I’ll just look at the modlog. You seem to have a bad habit of getting yourself banned.
Modlog seems pretty clean/inline with what the poster claimed
You could also add the NATO flag into your name to help maximize controversy.
Because “y’all can’t behave”
Eh, as a former Reddit mod, when the majority of comments are racism/transphobia, the easiest way to handle it is to lock the post.
Yeah, it’s kinda laziness, but when you have a life and don’t want to babysit a post for the next day… you don’t really have many options.
I guess one option could be don’t make a commitment you don’t have time to fulfill.
Let the voting system do its job of crowdsourcing the suppression of unhelpful content.
When I was on reddit it was just a fact that there’d be a pile of trash accumulated at the bottom of each thread, made of comments that were stupid or toxic and collapsed because their score was negative. That layer of shit at the bottom was well-hidden and didn’t interfere with the productive discussion happening above.
The voting system to suppress content suppresses reasonable views and ends up with highly upvoted nazi shit. Not because everyone is a Nazi (arguable) but because nazis have a motivation to push an agenda.
If Nazi shit is highly upvoted, then the community is already lost.
The voting system works, for the most part. Moderation is just to get rid of the early comment bullshit, or cull the already downvoted to hell posts.
I really don’t understand when moderators burn entire comment trees or lock threads. It defeats the purpose of the whole system, and makes it look like the community can’t do its job.
The voting system only serves to push people’s biases to the top. 98% of the top-rated comments on Reddit are worse than trash because they misinform, or are a regurgitation of a commonly-accepted half-truth.
Honestly, it really sounds like you don’t understand moderation on Reddit. The admins can and will come in a couple days later, see that you didn’t handle the removal of content deemed against sitewide rules, then hold the moderation team accountable for not handling it.
Once in a while, or during a huge influx is fine. But repeated “slips” results in the admins taking action against the sub itself, and in certain cases even the mods who are ignoring the problem.
What you are assuming is the case, simply isn’t.
Oh scary, are they going to dock your pay?
I really don’t understand …
Correct
and a lack of better shit to do
Yeeeeah… uh, the problem is that the community I was moderating was formerly pretty unmoderated. A loooot of racist and transphobic shit got upvoted.
“Letting the votes handle it” also doesn’t stop Reddit from seeing reports go unresolved, and action against the sub.
I get where your coming from, but you’re essentially saying “let the racism run rampant if you don’t have the time to manually review every comment on a post, you should have dedicated a few hours of your work day to this.”
“ya’ll can’t regurgitate your corpo owner’s opinions as your own”
Don’t get so haughty. Lemmy.world (based on the Netherlands) deletes posts and bans users that mention support for Luigi.
Earlier today I replied to a post on Lemmy.world about this problem, saw my post had many up votes and replied. But I couldn’t respond to any of them because the post had been deleted by mods.
Feel free to report on !yepowertrippinbastards@lemmy.dbzer0.com
.world mods and admins are infamous for being as bad as the ones on reddit, yes.
Reasonable instances should probably have defederated that cesspool long ago, but it’s probably too big, sadly.
Drag was banned from c/news for “misinformation and trolling” when drag said Luigi isn’t the shooter.
Surely it couldn’t possibly be because Drag is a shit-stirrer that goes around causing drama. At this rate I’m surprised Drag isn’t banned from more communities.
Y’alls fragile progressivism is always so funny.
I personally haven’t seen you stir all that much shit, and sometimes the shit needs a good stirring anyhow.
I’m not drag, but I do believe in dragon solidarity
Oh shit, sorry! My attention to detail yesterday… It was not good.
First off: Fuck reddit Fuck spez. Second and more important: All he needs is 1 person to agree. 1, that’s it.
And former moderator of r/jailbait, a Reddit community dedicated to posting pictures of underage girls. Don’t forget it
Not a great insult to be honest.
Face only a mother could love.
To set the narrative, of course. Reddit made a big showing last year of putting their own choice mods on communities and is now beholden to Wall Street since the IPO
Same reason they nerfed the algorithm to change from having new posts on the front page every ~15 minutes, to keeping the same posts there all day long.
Costs too much to vet every popular post to make sure it helps support the establishment. Oh well, here’s “puppy sees her owner for the first time in 2 months for 48 hours” (part 2!)
is that why front page is always 2 or 3 day old posts these days
Bingo
There used to be a meme that the front page was entirely new every time you refreshed the page.
Lmao they’re doing a terrible job at that, they locked it after some comments already made it through, might as well just delete the thread.
To censor the lazy?
Because you can’t tell if it’s locked until you open it and give up several ad hits.
Lol
UBlock Origin goes brrrrr
For me it used to be when I didn’t notice it was locked and was trying to submit a well-crafted reply.
To stop discussion from moving elsewhere
wouldn’t discussions have to move elsewhere?
People are content with having already seen the post to not seek it out
But they can delete any duplicate posts in their own sub to prevent comments.
Because spez is scared that someone will come for him.
I have read Luigi’s Mansion…
Free speech
Celebrating a murderer seems like a perfectly valid reason to lock a thread.
Hmm idk man. They were celebrating when Osama Bin Laden died.
What does that have to do with this?
OBL was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people. Brian Thompson was responsible for the deaths of thousands of innocent people.
The dots don’t need much connecting.
deaths of thousands
More like millions
This is why we should give way more credit to the hero who killed that monster Hitler.
Yea, maybe we should build a statue of that guy. 😉
Can’t this same reasoning then be used to justify the murder of Obama?
Did you think this was some kind of gotcha? Plenty of people would celebrate that all the same.
Exactly. And they’d be no better than the people praising Luigi.
lol murder. are you dense?
Well, you’re free to have that opinion.
