Diarrhea is usually caused by the body dumping water into your intestines so I was wondering if holding it in would help with dehydration?
I currently have food poisoning so that’s why I thought of this.
Eventually the pressure will overcome your sphincter strength. And its fluid - it only needs a tiny tiny hole to Come out. And its going to happen much faster than you think.
We have the technology…
yeah, don’t hold diarrhea, you will not win.
This is stupid because you’d essentially be holding onto the toxins that your body is trying to expell. Please just shit and drink water.
A major function of the colon is water absorption. The membrane is so small that viruses would be too large to get through.
If you have diarrhoea, it may have been caused by bad food, something you may not want to be absorbing, which may be why the body is trying to purge it ASAP.
You wouldn’t be absorbing “bad food”. The body has diarrhea because it is unable to absorb water in the colon. It’s unable to absorb water in the case of food poisoning because the bacteria that grew in the food is creating a protein that blocks the water absorption receptors in the colon lining.
Okay…but you certainly want to be getting rid of toxins, not holding them in your body. That makes no sense.
The body does not have diarrhea as a protective mechanism to purge the bacteria that caused the food poisoning. The bacteria is secreting a protein that inhibits water absorption which causes diarrhea.
Preventing or reducing diarrhea would be a beneficial outcome for a bacteria infection such as ETEC whose cause of death is dehydration.
This is by no means an endorsement of OP’s hold it in strategy.
I really liked this explanation going beyond the webmd “BaCTeRiA & ViRuSes caused ur diarrhea”, and I really like sources and further reading material, so
“Gut Microbiota and Diarrhea: An Updated Review”
https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/cellular-and-infection-microbiology/articles/10.3389/fcimb.2021.625210/fullRight after the Introduction section is “Gut Microbiota-Mediated Diarrhea and Its Mechanism”. The authors go into how some example bacteria/fungi/viruses stimulate diarrhea.
My take away has been 1) drink water, 2) if it doesn’t feel like a one-time wee out the wrong hole, probably go see a doctor
That was a fascinating read. Thanks for sharing.
Ok well let’s just pretend you have food poisoning and you hold in the bacteria but still somehow shit the rest of the food/water out, but you keep hydrated. Like what happens to all the bacteria you’re now holding in your body? I’m genuinely curious. I’m not arguing against you at all!
The reason one feels sick is because the bacteria found in the food were able to make a colony despite the innate defenses of the immune system such as the gut biome. As the bacterial colony is established, it creates an environment that is beneficial to the bacteria, but not beneficial to the surrounding tissue. This leads to cell death of the tissue. Upon cell, there are chemical markers released and enter the surrounding tissue and then the blood stream. Both of these signal to nearby and far off cells and tissues that there is somerhing happening and the cellular immune system, white blood cells, responds. These white cells have a host of defenses including raising the body’s temperature resulting in a fever.
From here many things can happen, but in the case of most healthy people in the developed world, the type of bacteria faced in food poisoning will be dealt with with little need for any medication that directly assists the immune response. Staying hydrated helps and mitigating digestive discomfort are the best things.
Having a drink?
It’s not to be reabsorbed, just absorbed.
Your body uses water to absorb nutrients. Diarrhea is when your colons run in overdrive and pump out their contents before the water is properly absorbed.
If your body thinks whatever is in your bowels is not safe and dumping it out the other end, you should find a toilet.
… in an expedited manner.
Find one or become one are the only options.
Some people think it’s funny but it’s really wet and runny.
Okay so how come spicy food makes the intestines not bother digesting it?
That’s the
your body thinks whatever is in your bowels is not safe
part.
Is there any way to increase the intestines’ spice tolerance?
Exposure over time, slowly ramping up intensity.
I can tell you that this is not universal. I eat very spicy food on a regular basis, and it does not give me diarrhea.
I can’t remember a time that it did, either. I remember when I felt the burn, twice, but not from diarrhea. Is it possible that it’s not the spice, but the spicy food? For instance, is your body reacting to the greasy chicken wings instead of the capsaicin?
Or for that matter, the salmonella on the chicken that’s being covered up with spices?
I likewise have felt the burn but never had diarrhea from spicy food — just food that wasn’t fresh.

In summary, mice were intragastrically administered with CAP at three doses to evaluate the effects of CAP on GI health. The results showed that administration of 40 mg/kg CAP did not have significant negative effects on the GI tract in mice, while 60 and 80 mg/kg CAP caused GI injury by damaging GI tissues and decreasing the levels of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10). Inflammation and histopathological changes were significant in the jejunum, ileum, and colon, but only slight in the stomach. CAP increased serum SP and CGRP levels in a dose-dependent manner, which may induce an immune response and visceral pain. The levels of cecal SCFAs also significantly changed in the 80 mg/kg CAP-treated groups. These effects of CAP might be related to the regulation of gut microbiota, especially Bifidobacterium, Lactobacillus, Faecalibacterium, and Butyricimonas. Moreover, the underlying mechanism of the correlation between serum neuropeptides and specific gut microbiota needs to be studied, suggesting that probiotics, as members of the gut microbiota, may be an alternative in relieving CAP-induced GI injury. These data will reveal the effects of CAP on GI health, provide insight into the experimental model of CAP-induced GI injury, and enrich the correlation analysis between CAP ingestion and gut microbiota.
It looks like it’s still being studied. For now, I guess you can resolve it to being an irritant when ingested in larger quantities than your body likes.
Yes, but that would be a bad thing
Your body is flushing all that water into your intestines because it detected something bad and decided to get rid of it fast. The longer the bad thing stays, the worse, so it just firehose blast it out.
If you keep it in, first you’ll have to deal with the increased pressure, not good for your intestines. Then your body will have to deal with whatever it is that is bad for you.
Better just go to a bathroom and a doctor if you’re still having it after 2 days
Have you had lot of success in your life trying to hold diarrhea?
For the most part yeah. Just don’t trust a fart.
I was Celiac for most of my life without knowing it so yes I got quite good at it
Side note but fuck my doctor for just telling me it was anxiety for years and that it took seeing a random NP to actually get me tested
Butt fuck your doctor?
I’d rather not but I appreciate the offer
No,no,you misunderstood!
That is a complicated procedure that should only be performed by specialists,it’s not comparable to what you do at home.
You get prior clearance from the buttfucking department of your insurance (they are always available and really good at this and also enjoy their job a lot) and then you get an appointment for a specialist within your network to buttfuck your doctor. If your insurance is good it can be ‘Vlad the impeller’, but most people only get ‘Norman needledick’ covered, but some choose a higher copay to afford ‘Redneck Randy’ at least.
Unless of course you are one of us Eurofilthys, we all get the same ‘Pierre Puckerwrecker’ to buttfuck our doctor after waiting for three years, but at least it’s free
I once white knuckled a bus ride with no option to stop for 3 hours. Probably 10+ times I was sure the wave of pain was gonna be that wave
jesus christ dude
I’m not religious but by the opening of hour three I was ready to make a deal with any deities listening
Did you make it?
I did, I had to rudely push my way to the front but luckily they stopped at a rest stop with stalls. I think it was clear why I had to do that as other riders walked into the bathroom lol
Doctor: You’re actually even more full of shit now.
Holding it in is antithetical to the concept of diarrhea
I have IBS and yeah, if I can successfully hold it in the urge goes away for a couple hours and a more normal BM is the result.
The challenge is knowing when its worth trying to hold it in. It’s like a 10% of the time kind of thing.
You’ll also likely need to pee more (like every 20-30min) despite not really drinking water in between restroom trips.
Yeah, if you hold it in you will absorb more of the water. Generally, though, your body dumping stuff out of it is a defense mechanism for expelling stuff that’s probably better off left alone. Though I guess you could do and hold some enemas for the same effect without potentially retaining things your body wants to expell.
Your colon is very good at extracting water; if you can hold it in then yes in theory it could remove some of the water. However in reality when you have diarrhoea your colon is inflamed and irritated during and you can’t really stop it happening. You’d have to overcome the cramping and the body trying to push the contents outwards.
The most likely outcome of trying to hold it in is it gets worse and you get an explosive and even less controlled expulsion.

This sounds like an X-Y Problem.
I mean I’m chugging water like it’s my job but it’s just going right through me lmao
I’m no doctor, but have you eaten anything salty recently? Salt might help keep the water inside for a longer time. (pls note that this is a speculation, so do your research)
Are you getting enough electrolytes? Dilute Gatorade/Powerade with equal amount of water (1:1 ratio). It will help your body absorb and hold onto the water.
Best of luck to you.
I’m in that description and I don’t like it
Yes, but it’s probably better to just let it go. Splurge on a pack of premium toilet paper, baby wipes, and some kind of topical cream to deal with an irritated starfish. Alternate water and gatorade. BRAT diet for 12-24 hours, then start adding chicken soup, boiled or baked potatoes.
Thank you for irritated starfish, made me chuckle
Not the first time I’ve been thanked for an irritated starfish… :)
In theory it would, in practice good luck holding it in if it’s really diarrhea.
